Chapter 1
Rynna and Finn were walking home from piano lessons. They were learning about the different notes in music.
The sun was setting low in the sky already. The summer air was cool, a big change from the hot day.
Up ahead, a boy was riding his bicycle towards the two siblings. The boy was dark haired. The boy stopped in front of Rynna and Finn.
“Hey! You guys are all done with lessons?” Their neighbor friend, Cole said.
“Yep,” Finn answered, “What have you been up to?”
“Been riding around,” Cole shrugged, “I’ve been looking for a black cat. I swear I saw it on this street.”
Rynna raised her eyebrow, “A black cat?”
Cole turned to her, “Yes, a black cat. I know it’s bad luck to even look at them, but I really want to find it.”
Just then, Rynna spotted a black cat behind Cole.
She pointed, “Do you mean that one?”
Cole looked where Rynna pointed, “Yes!” He turned his bike around and pedaled after it. To Rynna’s surprise, Finn ran after Cole.
She sighed. She really did love cats. But black cats? No thank you. Rynna had petted a black cat before. The cat had zapped her and its eyes glowed green. She was convinced she had been cursed. Ever since that day, she had stayed away.
She ran to catch up to Cole and Finn. They were still running after the cat. She could barely see the black cat itself.
By the time she caught up to the boys, they had lost the black cat.
“Where did it go?” Finn looked up and down the street, “Did you see it, Ryn?”
“No, the cat didn’t go my way,” Rynna panted.
Cole threw his arm up, “Darn it, we were so close!”
Rynna looked at the sky. The sun had gone down already. The street lights were turning on.
Finn looked around. “It’s dark already?”
“Man, how long have I been looking for that cat?!” Cole slapped his forehead.
Rynna shook her head, “See, this is why I stay away from black cats!”
Just then, Rynna felt something fuzzy touch her leg.
“Ahhh!” She screamed, kicking her feet.
Cole and Finn looked at her confused. Then they saw the black cat. It had walked next to Rynna.
Meow. Meooooowww.
“Hey, you found the kitty!” Cole said excitedly. “Come here, kitty kitty.”
The black cat ran away, entering an alley.
"Follow that cat!” Cole shouted, running to the alley. Finn ran after Cole. Rynna sighed once more then went after the boys. Seriously. She did not like black cats.
The cat-chase brought them to the streets. Every few minutes, the black cat would meow as if to say, hurry up!
Finally, the black cat stopped. The group looked around. They could hear sounds of a carnival nearby.
The black cat meowed and walked around the last house on the street.
The three of them followed the black cat. They went around the last house.
Cole spoke, “Well, the black cat has decided. We’re at the fairgrounds!”
