Chapter 1 my beginning

The moon was high in the sky and a light fog covered the ground. We sat on the hard wood floor of her hallway. We sat in the cold house, nothing but her warmth warmed it. I looked into her eyes with concern and her eyes were filled with hope and expression. She talked to me in a low voice, almost a whisper. “‘I love you”. A tension was in the air. She grabbed me and held me tight in her warm arms. “‘I don’t want you to ever leave”

All I could do was look at her. No words came out, just a sigh. I would never talk I was a dog not human. She headed to bed for the night I watched her leave the door closing behind her. And then her light went out. I went from the hall of her and her parents room to the living room close by to sleep. We lived in a small but nice house. The yard was big and the neighbors were nice. I enjoyed my life but it has changed significantly.

I felt the warm sun shining through the blinds on my golden pelt. My white patches on my fur glowed a bright white. It was long and silky. I hopped off the couch and the morning dew was on the grass. It was a bit hard to get on and off the couch since I was a bigger dog. I yawned as I stretched, feeling my muscles and bones all relax when I stood tall. I suddenly remembered what happened last night. My paws creaked on the floor on my way to her room. I walked in seeing the door was propped open slightly.

My gaze fell on her laying in bed. The door was probably propped open from her parents, checking on her in the middle of the night. I walked over giving her a few licks on her cheek. Tired, she rose from her bed and gave me a pat on the head “‘Good morning duke” she said in an affectionate tone.

Her parents were walking out of their room. You could hear their door open with a small squeak. They went to do their normal things, get coffee and sit on the couch for a bit with me. But I would not be there. I would normally eat my homemade meals with my family mostly in the mornings. The sun was shining brighter than it was when I got up. It had been at least 15 minutes. Some footsteps approached the door. It was her mom “duke come eat Jenny is asleep leave her be I know you want a walk” she called just above a whisper

She stopped at the door and waited for me to come but I just laid there not moving. She finally stepped in after I didn’t come to her call. Shutting my eyes I listened to her as she walked over to see me. I stood my ground. I was comfortable and did not want to be disturbed. She tried to lift me off the soft bed but Jenny insisted that I stayed in the bed instead of leaving.

Jenny’s dad came in to see what was going on. He put his mug down on the old white bed side table that had been warn down over the years. He came over and lifted me off the bed and put me on the ground. A great big sigh came out of me. Defeated once again. We finally got around to the walk but Jenny was a bit off. She smelt different. There was a rotting smell coming from her.

Jenny didn’t get better, she just got worse so her parents decided to take her to a doctor. We hopped in the car and nobody talked. It was just silent. On the ride I stuck my head out the window eating the flies that went by. It got a small chuckle out of my family.

We finally arrived and made it to the hospital where the doctor was. I had to wait in the car because I was not a service dog. I sat for what seemed like ages, when I finally saw them they didn’t look happy. They got in the car and her mom held her all the way home.

After a while she was on a bed but not like a normal bed. She had medical equipment on her. The days were long. I just sat there and watched the nurses and doctors come and go. She never got better. Her hair fell out and she grew weak. I found out that she had cancer.

A few days later she passed in her sleep. I felt her warmth drop. I sat with her until the morning. She looked peaceful on the bed. I knew she was in a better place now. Her parents finally got up and called to her but she never responded. They understood that she had to go because she was getting worse by the day.
