Code: Null.Refrain - In The Client's Shadow

"I only got to read the first chapter today, but I definitely will read the rest very soon. Your writing is great, Rei. You give detailed descriptions and describe emotions beautifully. The mystery of who this random kid is exciting. I can't wait to see what else you have in store."

To give “Refrain (what remains as echo)” to “Null (what never existed).”

"Code.Null: Refrain is a slow, introspective story of Yui, a boy who was never meant to exist, and Kyle, another record of existence that was meant to be erased. The pacing is deliberately slow, offering a deep-dive into Yui and Kyle’s unspoken connection and the former’s determination to find the latter. It goes even deeper than that; it’s to prove that he exists. Leon is a former soldier accompanying Yui, the two of them handling troublesome jobs for a living, and they both received the job of finding Kyle. Leon’s firm, calm, but his support for Yui is apparent and palpable. There’s always this sort of comforting quiet in their interactions, warm in a way. I’m trying my best not to spoil anything here, but this anonymous request has an interesting story behind it that contributes further to Yui and Kyle’s connection 😅. The end is especially heartwarming, contributing to the recurring theme that if someone remembers you, if you’re there in someone’s heart, then you definitely existed, you mattered. That’s what Yui did, to give “Refrain (what remains as echo)” to “Null (what never existed).” However, there were some issues with pacing at the beginning, and some sequences felt drawn out. You can look into that by consistently introducing new developments to the plot to show progress. Moreover, Leon felt too passive for the majority of the book. You can maybe give him a more active role in the book so that it doesn’t feel like he’s just following Yui around. Overall, it’s been a blast, and I’m hoping for a continuation soon. You’ve got a lot of opportunities to further explore the world you’ve set up, introduce new challenges, and turn this into a full-on series. Great job, Rei 😉."
