Chapter One- After The Final Whistle
The stadium was almost silent. Everyone else had left the field, but Daniel Vega stayed behind, staring down at the white line like it had betrayed him.
He replayed every mistake from the scrimmage. Every pass that wasn’t perfect. Every second he failed to live up to the version of himself everyone expected.
The captain doesn’t fall apart. Not where anyone can see.
A soft chuckle broke the quiet.
“You’re still out here? The lights are about to go off.”
Daniel turned. Alina Reyes stood at the edge of the field, her ponytail messy, a sports bag slung over her shoulder. Her eyes carried that familiar mix of confidence and mischief… the one thing he was never prepared for.
“You shouldn’t be around me after hours,” he said. His voice came out rougher than intended.
“Says who?” She walked closer, grass muffling her steps. “My dad?” She rolled her eyes. “He’s busy yelling at referees.”
A small smile almost betrayed him. Almost.
“You played well,” she added.
“No. I didn’t.”
“Daniel…” Her tone softened. “You don’t have to be perfect every second.”
He looked away. “That’s kind of the job.”
Alina sighed and stepped right onto the center circle beside him. Close enough that he could feel the warmth of her presence. Dangerous proximity.
“Then maybe it’s a terrible job,” she whispered.
He swallowed. Hard. His heartbeat picked up, suddenly louder than the stadium speakers.
She reached up, fingers lightly brushing a piece of grass from his hair.
That simple touch was chaos.
“Alina,” he warned.
“Yes, Captain?”
The title sounded nothing like respect. It sounded like trouble.
The stadium lights flickered, signaling shutdown.
She smiled like she had all the time in the world.
“You walking me out?” she asked.
Daniel hesitated.
If he said yes, he stepped over a line he could never erase.
If he said no, he’d regret it for the rest of the night.
He took a slow breath and nodded.
One step toward her.
One step away from control.
Game on.
