CHAPTER 1
*Chapter One*
Bridget Stone desperately ran onto the pier at North Beach. It looked like a beautiful sunny day but the sun was beating so hard on her head that she felt droplets of sweat on her forehead. She came to the edge of the pier, gasping for breath. There was no one else around. The sea looked deep blue, mesmerizing, calling her in.
Tears streamed down her cheeks obscuring her sight even more than the sun, her heart racing, hands trembling. Her heart was filled with pure anguish. No where to go except her one trusted friend whom she didn’t want to burden again.
She thought to herself, “Could this be it? Is this how it’s supposed to end?”
She was scared but really had nothing to lose. She wondered if she could be saved, Is she worth being saved? Surely there’s nothing to live for.
She looked around, aching and shaking, looking for a miracle, but there was no one in sight! She clung tightly to herself and cried ugly, miserable tears. She wiped away her tears with her hands.
She remembered her husband throwing her out of her mansion with just the clothes on her back. Thankfully, she didn’t spend every cent he had given her, opening up her own account with some of the spending money to start over. That came in handy for a short while, until it wasn’t enough.
Mr. Friedrichs had robbed her for the past two months. She was financially destitute and refused to trouble her friend Rebecca Flint. Rebecca certainly had her plate full.
The abuse, the loneliness and the financial struggle were beyond compare. All she wanted was to feel like she mattered, some kindness and mercy. Somewhere inside her, she needed someone to save her. She knew how unreliable people could be—especially men, so she put one foot off the bridge in an attempt to jump!
