Chapter 1 – The New Girl

Aria’s POV

The gates of Ravenwood Academy were taller than I expected. Black iron, crawling with ivy, and shining under the morning sun like something out of an old movie. Behind them stretched a campus so big it could’ve been its own city manicured lawns, marble fountains, and students walking in crisp uniforms like they’d been born rich.

I stepped out of my uncle’s car, taking a slow breath. The air smelled different here cleaner, sharper. New beginnings always did.

“Are you sure about this, Aria?” my uncle,Mikhail, asked, resting his hands on the steering wheel.

“I’m sure,” I said, adjusting the strap of my bag. “It’s just school.”

He gave me a look the kind that said you’re your father’s daughter, all right.Then he handed me a small silver cross. “Your father said to keep this close.”

I nodded, fingers curling around it. “Tell him I’ll call later.”

He smiled faintly before driving off, leaving me standing at the gates with two suitcases and a head full of promises I wasn’t sure I could keep.

Ravenwood wasn’t my first school, but it was my first time stepping into a place where no one knew who I was. And that’s exactly how I wanted it.

A group of girls passed by, their whispers floating back to me. “She must be the new scholarship student.”

Scholarship. Right. That’s what the school thought.

“Hi!”

The voice was bright and warm. I turned to see a girl with curly brown hair, big glasses, and eyes that couldn’t decide if they were green or gold. She had a clipboard tucked under her arm and a grin that could melt ice.

“I’m Lila Brooks,” she said. “Welcome to Ravenwood! I’m your tour guide for today.”

Her energy was… something. I couldn’t help but smile back. “Nice to meet you.”

“Come on, I’ll show you around,” she said, walking ahead like she had three cups of coffee for breakfast. “So, Ravenwood is basically a castle for rich kids. Everyone here either owns something, is famous, or is trying to be.”

I raised an eyebrow. “And you?”

“I own nothing,” she said cheerfully. “But I’m fun at parties.”

I laughed under my breath. I liked her already.

We passed through hallways lined with portraits and gold-framed awards. Lila pointed at a group of girls gathered by a marble staircase, all designer shoes and perfect hair.

“See those girls?” she whispered. “That’s Vanessa Monroe and her royal court. She’s the queen bee around here rich, mean, and terrifyingly stylish. The tall one with the black hair is Paige, and the redhead is Chloe. They kind of… run the school.”

Vanessa turned her head just enough for our eyes to meet. There was that look the silent challenge, the kind that said know your place.

I held her gaze, unblinking. Her smirk faded first.

Lila’s voice broke through. “Yeah, maybe don’t do that,” she muttered nervously. “Vanessa doesn’t like competition.”

“I wasn’t competing,” I said calmly. “I was looking.”

She blinked. “You’re bold. I like that.”

She kept talking as we walked, filling the silence with stories the best hangout spots, the weird school traditions, the upcoming dance. Then she lowered her voice like she was revealing state secrets.

We stepped out into the courtyard again, sunlight spilling across the path. Lila was pointing toward the sports field when the sound of laughter drew my attention.

A group of students walked by all confidence and designer sneakers, the kind of people who didn’t just fit in but owned every space they entered. Phones came out instantly. A few girls giggled, whispering behind their hands.

I didn’t even know who they were yet, but I could feel it that strange, magnetic pull people have when they’re used to being admired.

The guy at the center of the group walked like the world had been built for him. Dark hair that caught the sun, easy posture, sharp grin. His friends were loud, laughing, teasing each other, but his attention stayed fixed ahead completely unfazed by the cameras, the stares, or the whispers.

People moved out of his way like it was instinct.

“That,” Lila said, her voice dropping to a mix of awe and excitement, “is Liam Knight the king of Ravenwood Academy. Captain of the fencing team, heir to knight Enterprises, student body golden boy, rumored heartbreaker, and according to some literal perfection in human form.”

I raised an eyebrow. “You practiced that speech?”

She laughed. “Maybe. He’s… kind of a big deal here.”

I glanced back at him just as he turned slightly our eyes met for the briefest moment. There was no smirk, no arrogance, just quiet curiosity. Then he looked away, and the spell broke.

“He seems… normal,” I said finally.

She gasped. “Normal? You’re immune. I like you even more.”

We both laughed as we continued walking, her voice floating with every step, full of stories and secrets.

When we reached the dorm building, she opened the door to a bright, spacious room with two beds, matching desks, and a window view of the courtyard.

“Looks like you’ll be sharing,” she said. “Your roommate’s out right now, but you’re with Aubrey Hale. She’s in Vanessa’s group the Queens I mentioned but don’t worry, she’s sweet. Not all of them are terrible.”

I nodded slowly. “Good to know.”

“Anyway,” She continued, “Aubrey’s nice to everyone, even the ones Vanessa dislikes. You’ll probably get along with her.”

I looked around the room tidy, polished, a faint scent of jasmine lingering near the window. Someone had lined up art supplies neatly on the other desk.

“She seems organized,” I said.

“Yeah,” She smiled. “She’s the calm in their storm.”

I placed my silver cross on the nightstand and turned toward her.

“Thank you, Lila,” I said quietly. “For showing me around.”

She grinned, pushing her glasses up. “Anytime, mystery girl. Just promise you won’t pick a fight with Vanessa on your first day.”

“I don’t pick fights,” I said, closing my suitcase. “But I don’t walk away from them either.”

She blinked, then laughed nervously. “Noted.”

Then she left. I stood by the window watching the sun dip over the courtyard. The laughter from below echoed faintly rich kids, perfect lives, perfect lies.

Ravenwood looked beautiful from up here.

But beauty could be dangerous.

And I wasn’t here to be impressed.
