Chapter 1 — Before Everything Changed

Some beginnings arrive quietly.

But they change your life in a whisper.

Athens, 2018 — Monday Evening

It all began on a night when nobody spoke.

Only the rain.

And the sound of keys falling onto the landing.

The dusk painted the sky in shades of crimson, and the streets gleamed like wet film beneath the last traces of daylight. On the corner, a street singer carried a melody in a low voice. Its echo drifted slowly upward from the pavement, spreading across the cold tiles.

Andreas climbed the stairs with that familiar weight on his shoulders, as if he were carrying the entire day by the collar. His jacket still held the dust and chill of the city. The door opened with the same familiar click, and the apartment welcomed him in half-light. Something inside had been left on.

In the living room, his wife, Daphne, sat wrapped in a throw blanket. The television was playing, but her gaze was somewhere else.

A strip of light escaped from the room of their eighteen-year-old daughter, Ismini. Notes covered in colors, highlighted pages, hurried breaths. University entrance exams drawing closer and stretching the nights longer.

In the kitchen, the evening air slipped in through the window, carrying the faint scent of a lemon tree.

He filled a glass with water and remained standing.

"Make it stop," he had whispered on Sunday.

And now something was opening again in the very place where he had believed everything had finally closed.

His phone lit up in his hand.

A notification.

A group photo from yesterday, taken at the end of practice. Faces lined up beneath the cold fluorescent lights of the gym.

And there, among the comments:

"Andreas, your hair has gone white."

He did not reply.

He took two sips of water.

As if testing whether life could still pass through his throat.

Across the street, the petunias on a balcony stirred gently in the breeze. The flowers hidden behind still held their color. The ones in front had already begun to fade.

Ismini appeared in the doorway.

“Dad?”

“I’m here.”

“Everything okay?”

For a moment, Andreas looked at her as though measuring how much a man could say inside a house before everything changed.

“Not yet. But we’ll see.”

And for the first time, he did not take it back.

The phone remained on the table.

The night went on.

And he knew that if he touched it again, nothing would remain the same.

And something inside him refused to close.

Your story is truly wonderful and deeply touching. There is such beauty and depth in your words that the emotions reach straight to the heart. Every scene is written so vividly that it comes alive before the eyes. The flow of the writing is very smooth and completely holds the reader’s attention. Truly excellent work.
