THIRST
In the bustling city, a young girl named Paris Noel lived. She was a vision of innocent beauty, untouched, with a face that seemed to radiate pure goodness.
Though she had never experienced love or romance, she often daydreamed about meeting a man who would sweep her off her feet.
And why not? Paris was beautiful and kind, with a heart as gentle as a dove’s.
In the evenings, after work, she would return to her cozy apartment, its walls adorned with photographs and paintings collected from her travels around the world. Though her life may have seemed ordinary to some, to Paris, it was nothing short of extraordinary.
She was filled with ambition and dreams of achieving great things.
Her mother, Pauline, worked as a nurse and often took the night shift to support the family. She would come home exhausted in the morning and sleep until Paris returned from school.
Despite being only eight years old, Paris understood the sacrifices her mother made for them.
Paris was a good daughter—understanding and appreciative of her mother’s hard work and dedication. She took on the responsibility of caring for herself and her mother during the day. She would often prepare snacks for them both, even if it were as simple as making peanut butter sandwiches with the utmost care.
Though Pauline appreciated her daughter’s efforts, she felt guilty for not being able to be there more.
From the moment she turned twelve, Paris was drawn to the warm glow of the oven. Immersed in the art of baking, she soon discovered her true passion: becoming a chef.
After years of honing her craft and working her way up through various kitchens, Paris landed a coveted position as a sous chef at a luxurious five-star restaurant in the heart of the city. She poured her heart and soul into every dish she created.
As darkness fell over the bustling city, Paris knew this was her chance to showcase her skills and make a lasting impression on the culinary world. Tonight, the restaurant was hosting a grand charity function.
The air buzzed with energy as she readied herself for the evening, her anticipation growing by the second.
The banquet hall was a dazzling display of opulence and grandeur. The guests, adorned in their finest attire, exuded sophistication and grace. The women shimmered in flowing gowns, each one more stunning than the last, while the men stood tall in tailored suits and tuxedos.
In the background, elegant piano notes filled the room, adding to the graceful ambiance. Glasses clinked, and laughter echoed through the halls—it was clear this was a gathering of the most refined and distinguished individuals.
But in the kitchen, it was a chaotic symphony of stovetops hissing and sizzling.
Pots and pans brimmed with bubbling sauces and soups. Every chef and sous chef was in a blur of motion—cooking, prepping, dicing, and chopping ingredients.
Amidst the chaos, waiters and servers buzzed like worker bees, swiftly retrieving dishes and delivering them to awaiting tables.
The air was thick with the aroma of spices and herbs, mingling with the clanging of pots and rapid-fire orders being shouted across the room. It was a scene of controlled madness, a well-oiled machine operating at full speed in the heart of the restaurant.
The kitchen was hyperactive, and the head chef’s loud and demanding presence added even more heat and pressure to the already frenzied atmosphere.
His booming voice echoed through the bustling kitchen, demanding attention from all within earshot.
“Is that steak ready yet?!” he bellowed, his face red with frustration. Paris, a junior chef, quickly responded, her heart racing.
“Yes, chef,” she stammered, trying to keep up with his quick pace and intense energy.
“Why is it still not ready?” he roared, his back turned as he furiously chopped vegetables. He was a good man at heart, but in moments like this—when orders piled up and time was critical—his temper flared.
“Where is the Worcestershire sauce I asked for?” he shouted at the team.
“This needs more salt!” he barked, sending multiple people scrambling to fulfill his requests.
Paris hastily chopped the delicate chives for garnish. In her haste, she accidentally nicked her finger, and a small bead of blood trickled down.
She quickly grabbed a tissue, blotted it, and discarded it in the trash. Unbeknownst to her, a few drops of blood had fallen onto the perfectly cooked steak that was about to be served.
Amid the crowd of guests stood a nobleman of immense wealth and influence. Despite his power, he lived a reclusive life, always keeping a low profile.
It was necessary for someone of his status—for the greater the man, the smaller his hiding place. From the shadows, he could observe and control, like a master puppeteer pulling the strings of the world. But even in seclusion, he couldn’t escape the weight of responsibility or the constant threat of exposure.
The walls of his opulent mansion often felt like a prison, reminding him that no amount of riches or influence could protect him from the dangers that lurked outside.
He was a three-hundred-year-old vampire with sharp, angled features and piercing blue eyes that glinted in the moonlight. His pale skin was cool to the touch, and his elongated canines remained hidden from the world.
He loved the warm, rich elixir of human blood, reveling in its intoxicating taste. It was his sustenance, his only true desire.
He was arrogant and a heartbreaker. Many women fell for his charm, only to be ignored and left heartbroken. A select few spent a night in his bed, but the warmth never lasted.
He reveled in his freedom and did as he pleased, with no regard for others.
But beneath the facade of strength and power, a darkness lingered. The vampire was slowly dying.
Despite the impending threat to his life, not a trace of fear crossed his face. His stoic expression masked the vulnerability within—a weighty secret only two others knew, while the world saw him as invincible.
His presence at the party was merely a formality; he had not intended to stay long. A plate of medium-rare steak was placed before him, its aroma tantalizing. But then another scent caught his attention—human blood.
Unable to resist, he swiped his finger across the meat and brought it to his lips.
Terence, his tall and lean confidant, furrowed his brows. Only he and the ancient family doctor knew the truth: the vampire had been poisoned.
Before Terence could stop him, the vampire tasted it. The delicate fluid coated his tongue, sending shivers of pleasure through his body.
Terence’s face tightened with confusion. Master never indulges in human food. Why would he risk it now?
The vampire’s entire body jolted upright, his senses on high alert. Terence realized something was wrong. He sniffed and detected it—the unmistakable stench of blood.
But for the vampire, it was not repulsive. It was alluring, intoxicating, sharper and sweeter than anything he had ever tasted.
An insatiable thirst consumed him. He needed more.
Pushing through the crowd, he followed the scent.
The smell of savory food wafted through the kitchen, mingling with sizzling meat and bubbling sauces. The chaos threatened to overwhelm him, but he focused only on the irresistible aroma of blood.
His steps quickened, his heart pounding. The scent grew stronger with each stride, pulling him like a moth to a flame.
Then he saw her.
A brown-haired girl stood with her back to him, intent on her work. Her sweet, delicate scent wrapped around him, sending shivers down his spine. His fangs descended, his eyes glowed blood red.
Paris plated another steak with trembling hands, the sting of her cut still fresh. She glanced at the cut finger, telling herself it was nothing. Just a nick. She couldn’t afford mistakes. Not tonight.
As Paris turned, their eyes met.
She saw a tall man in a perfectly tailored suit, his mysterious presence instantly captivating her. Her gaze lingered on his chiseled jawline, her cheeks flushing with warmth.
“Can I help you, sir?” she asked softly.
The vampire said nothing, staring at her as though spellbound.
A shift in the air made her pause. The kitchen roared with orders and clattering pans, but she felt eyes on her—sharp, unyielding, pulling her in.
His presence didn’t belong in the chaos of the kitchen. He belonged in shadows—or dreams.
Her chest tightened. Who is he? And why can’t I look away?
His gaze lingered on her, dark and searching, as though peeling away every layer of her soul. The silence stretched until heat rose in her cheeks.
She cleared her throat. “Are you looking for something?”
Still, no answer. His dark eyes locked on hers, filled with both hunger and warmth.
Finally, his lips curved, though his eyes never softened. “You cut your finger.”
Paris stiffened. “H-how did you—?” She glanced nervously around, then leaned closer, whispering, “Please… don’t tell anyone.”
A slow smile curved his lips. He stepped closer, slow and deliberate, as though stalking prey. He imagined sinking his teeth into her neck, tasting the hot, pulsing life beneath her skin.
His voice dropped to a near whisper. “Your secret is safe with me.”
The timbre of his words wrapped around her, rich and dangerous. The closeness made her pulse quicken. She nearly dropped the plate. Innocently, she gazed up at him. Why does he make me feel like I’ve already given something away?
She swallowed, her instincts torn between retreat and fascination. He was a stranger, yet some part of her wanted to linger in the spell of his presence.
Meanwhile, his hunger gnawed at him. The scent of her blood clung to the air, sweeter than any vintage he had tasted in three hundred years. His throat burned with want. But it wasn’t only her blood—her warmth, her innocence, her stubborn will glimmered beneath her wide eyes. If I touch her, I will not stop. And if I stop… I may never want to let her go.
The head chef’s voice shattered the moment. “Paris! The steak—now!”
She jumped slightly. “Yes, Chef!”
By the time she turned back, the stranger had vanished.
A pang of unease settled in her chest.
Who was he? she wondered, before forcing herself to focus on her work.
