Halloween Short Story: The Lake Surprise part one

Summary

What begins as an innocent lakeside hangout turns into a nightmare that none of them will ever forget. Billy, a quiet and kindhearted teen hopelessly in love with his friend Emma, joins five others for a sunny day by the old lake on the edge of town. But behind the laughter hides a cruel prank — one meant to humiliate him for good. When the joke spirals out of control, blood fills the water, and something unnatural stirs beneath the surface. Billy’s screams echo through the trees as he’s pulled from the lake—torn, broken, but somehow still alive. Now, as his fate hangs by a thread, guilt binds the group in silence. They vow never to speak of what happened that day. Yet the shadows by the lake seem to whisper otherwise… and not everything that was lost beneath the water chose to stay there. A haunting tale of betrayal, guilt, and the thin line between life and what comes after — The Lake Surprise marks the beginning of a chilling new Halloween legend.

Chapter 1

It was supposed to be a fun day — six friends heading out to the old lake on the edge of town, carrying laughter, snacks, and a secret plan for Billy.

“Come on, Billy! Let’s go to the lake!” Emma called, her voice bright and teasing.

Emma — the girl who held Billy’s heart. To her, he was just a friend, someone kind and easy to be around. But to Billy, she was everything. Every smile, every glance, every word from her meant more than she would ever know.

As the group made their way down the worn dirt path, the other two in the back exchanged quick looks. One raised a hand and gave a subtle signal toward the three walking ahead. The message was clear — everything was set.

“Hey, Emma!” Sam called out suddenly. “Come here for a sec — gotta show you something.”

“Okay, Sam! I’ll be right there!” she replied before turning to Billy. “Go on ahead, Billy! I’ll catch up.”

Billy nodded, hiding the small sting in his chest. “Okay, Emma… okay.”

He ran ahead, excitement and nerves mixing in his chest as the water came into view.

A moment later — a splash.

Emma turned, startled. Billy was in the water, laughing at first — then screaming.

“Aaaaah! Something’s biting me! Aaaaaah, help!”

“Sam! Go help him!” Emma shouted, panic twisting her voice.

Sam froze, eyes wide, as the other three rushed forward. One of them, Danny, held a fishing rod.

“What’s going on?” he yelled.

“Billy needs help!” Emma screamed. “Please, Danny, do something!”

Danny looked at her — guilt flickering in his eyes. He hesitated, then swallowed hard. “Y-yeah… yeah, I got him.”

He cast the hook toward Billy. The metal snagged — not on his shirt, but deep into his chest. Billy’s screams echoed across the lake as Danny began to reel him in. Blood mixed with the dark water, and under the ripples, something moved — sharp fins and hungry eyes.

Billy’s body thrashed wildly as Danny pulled harder, the fishing line groaning under the strain. When they finally dragged him onto the muddy shore, everyone froze in horror.

Billy’s legs were torn open — ragged, bleeding wounds where pieces of flesh were missing. The lake water around him shimmered dark red. Beneath the ripples, flashes of silver darted back and forth, slicing through the water like knives.

“Wh-what was that?” Sam gasped, stumbling backward.

Emma dropped to her knees beside Billy, her hands trembling as she tried to stop the bleeding. “Billy! Stay with me, please!” she cried. Her voice cracked as she looked toward the water. The movement under the surface didn’t stop — it only grew more frantic.

She saw them then — small, vicious shapes with razor-sharp teeth glinting in the light.

“Piranhas…?” she whispered in disbelief. “Why are there piranhas in this lake?”

Danny’s face went pale. His hands shook so badly the fishing rod slipped from his grip. “I—I don’t have the slightest idea,” he stammered.

The others stood frozen, eyes wide, guilt creeping across their faces like a shadow. None dared to speak. None dared to move.

Emma turned toward them, fury and fear burning in her eyes. “This was supposed to be a joke, wasn’t it? A prank? Who did this?”

No one answered. Sam looked down. Danny swallowed hard. The others stared blankly into the trees. No words came — just the sound of Billy’s ragged breathing and the gentle ripples of the lake that had almost claimed him.

As sirens echoed faintly in the distance, Emma held Billy’s hand, whispering, “Stay awake… please, stay with me.”

Billy’s eyes fluttered, his lips trembling as he tried to speak — but no words came.

When the ambulance arrived, his body was pale and still, yet his heart was faintly beating. They rushed him away into the night.

His fate remains uncertain.

In the days that followed, the group swore never to speak of what really happened by the lake — who planned the prank, or who knew what lurked beneath the water.

But one truth lingered, heavy and cold:

ignorance doesn’t make you innocent.

It only ties you to the guilt that refuses to drown.
