Chapter One: Welcome to Camp Bookview Valley

Thursday, June 16th 2011

“Are you all packed and ready to go?” Dean asks, leaning against my door frame; his dark blue hair tousled and his smile sheepish. He’s been waiting on me for over two hours now, but I can’t help that I literally need to pack so many different sets of clothes.

“Almost,” I grin at him, shoving another shirt into my already over-filled suitcase, “I think this should do it.”

His stormy grey eyes glance over the bag in my hands, “Mm, I would think so, considering you’re packed for the whole summer...even though we’ll only be there for about five days.”

“On the bright side, I won’t have to repack when we go back up for the campers.” My fingers fight against the strain on the zipper. It will zip closed, even if I have to force it.

“For your sake, I really hope camp has a washing machine,” My dad chuckles, walking over to stand next to Dean, “You about ready, kiddos?”

“This should be the last bag.” I nod, leaning proudly over the barely constrained suitcase. It’s a bit larger than it should be, but it only has to last the two hour drive up to camp. Luckily, dad agreed to drop us off. They told me I could take Luci’s car, but I’m still not quite ready for that and Dean’s motorcycle won’t make it up the mountain. His mom refused to buy him a car, and he hasn’t been able to afford one yet, so he got a bike instead. I think it’s pretty cool.

“Alright, well I’ll take it down. Make sure you have everything,” Dad grabs my bag, but pauses at the door, “And I would hurry before your mother packs the whole kitchen for you. Last I checked, she already made you lunch for tomorrow too.”

“Doesn’t she know there’s a cafeteria at the camp?” I laugh as dad heads down the stairs.

“You’re sure you have everything?” Dean asks, pulling my gaze to him.

“Yeah, pretty sure. Oh! Before I forget,” I slide my phone out of my pocket and place it on the nightstand beside my bed, “Still hate that even during training we’re not allowed to have electronics.”

“Me too,” Dean sighs, “but they did reassure us that camp has a phone.” He steps over to me and pulls me into his arms, planting a kiss on the top of my head.

“Everything will be fine.” I say, trying to reassure the both of us. There shouldn’t be any more surprises. With both Skeletons dead and the Crimson Skeleton silent for the last four months, camp should be a piece of cake.

“Alright, we should probably go. I don’t think the camp chef will be too happy if we supply food for everyone the entire time.”

“Hey, that just means they’ll be paid to do nothing!”

. . . . .

The two hour drive goes by pretty quickly and before I know it, we’re at camp. I wave after my dad as he pulls away, leaving Dean and I on our own. Well, not really on our own, I’m pretty sure Brianna is already here.

“You ready for this?” Dean asks as we face the looming wooden cabin before us.

“Definitely.” He grabs my hand and we head in through the large oak doors. The entry room is huge, with a very tall ceiling, and a balcony from the second floor peering down at us. In the center of the room is a fireplace, unlit since it’s pretty warm thanks to the summer heat. In front of the fireplace is a blue sofa and beside that is a lighter blue love seat. The carpet is huge and square, made up of a very ugly, dark blue design. A deer’s head rests above the fireplace, watching us as we enter. A couple of bags rest next to the grand staircase that leads up to the balcony. At least we know someone else is definitely here, other than the creepy deer head. Does that thing not scare kids constantly?

“MORGAN!” Right on cue, Brianna’s blonde head appears from the balcony. She waves down at us before racing down the stairs, “You guys took forever! I have been dying without my phone, never knowing when anyone is going to show up! I was literally stuck with Director Lockewood for an hour before Flynn showed up.”

“And that’s...bad?” Dean asks with a tilted smile.

“Yes.” Bri doesn’t smile, in fact, I think she is very serious.

“Well, we’re here now, and I’m guessing Flynn is somewhere around here too?”

“Yeah, he’s upstairs with his boyfriend,” Bri says mockingly, “Like I literally haven’t been able to get a word in between their smooching.”

I snort, “Since when does Flynn have a boyfriend?”

“Last month, when he went to Poland. He didn’t tell you guys cause he wanted it to be a surprise....which...SURPRISE!” Brianna shrugs, “My bad, but anyway, his boyfriend is pretty nice.”

“That’s good,” Dean chuckles with a squeeze to my hand, “Would you happen to know where our rooms are? Morgan packed the whole house, and this bag is pretty heavy.” I shoot Dean a glare. In his other hand is my overfilled suitcase, and he’s carrying my backpack on his back. All I have is his backpack, which is way lighter than mine. I hope he brought enough clothes, from the looks of this place I doubt they have a washing machine.

“Oh, I think you’re in the same room as Flynn, and Morgan is with me. I’ll show you guys the way.” Bri instantly turns on her heel and begins to strut back up the stairs, not waiting to make sure we’re following. With a glance at each other, we follow her, heavy bags in tow.

The second floor turns into two hallways, one leading to the right, and the other to the left. Brianna stops at the intersection and turns back to us, “Dean you’re off to the left, third door.” We quickly swap bags before he kisses me on the cheek and walks off. I roll my suitcase, with my own backpack now slung over my shoulder, towards our room.

She turns into the second room, leading me into a pretty nice area. There’s two bunks, four girls to a room. That’s not too bad. I set my stuff beside the empty bed, claiming the bottom bunk. Bri has claimed the bottom bunk of the opposite bed.

“So, you and Dean,” Brianna starts, a large smile on her face, “You guys seem so serious now! I know it’s not been too long since I’ve seen you, but like, it looks like things have changed since I spent a week at the beach.”

I laugh, “Not much has changed, Bri. I mean, sure, we’re pretty close now, but I don’t think much closer since we hung out last. I mean, talk about a change, Flynn and his boyfriend? I need to meet him, what’s his name? I feel like I’ve missed so much!” Honestly, it still feels a little weird, being with Dean. He was such a jerk four months ago, but since then he’s apologized and made up for it. He took me on a couple dates and before I knew it, we were officially going out. Bri was super psyched for me, but I guess we never acted like an actual couple before. I don’t know, we just spent the past two months together, seeing each other every day. Maybe we did get closer that week when Bri was away; seeing as we only spent time with each other.

“His name is Sebastien, and I can’t tell you any more. I wasn’t supposed to say anything in the first place! Flynn is going to kill me!” It’s good to know I’m not the only one who has a new relationship. I can’t wait to meet Sebastien, I’m sure he’s perfect for Flynn.

I wave her off, “Nah, he won’t.”

“You’re right, but still.” I start to unpack my things as Bri watches from her bunk. This place is nice enough, there’s a small window next to my bunk, my own dresser, and a place I could’ve plugged my phone up had I been allowed to bring it. I’m kind of surprised Bri didn’t sneak in her phone, but I guess even she’s changed over the last few months.

“So, what’s first on the agenda? Or, do we not get to know til everyone is here?”

“Director Lockewood only told me that we’d have a meeting and dinner when everyone got here. Other than that, I have no clue.” Bri sighs. She probably bludgeoned him with questions for that entire hour she was stuck with him; more like he was stuck with her.

“Any idea as to when everyone else will get here?”

“No,” Bri pouts, “I don’t see why we couldn’t just have our phones for the training week. I mean, there’s no kids here.”

“Other than you.”

“Rude.” There’s a knock at the door and we both jump.

“Sorry, didn’t mean to scare.” Harper says, dragging a large bag through the door.

“HARPER! FINALLY!” Bri exclaims, hopping out of bed so fast I’m surprised she didn’t bump her head. Harper looks basically the same: short black hair, hazel eyes, and an outfit making her look like a real punk from the 70s. Although, to be fair, I did see her like two days ago at the cafe for like an hour. Unlike Flynn and Bri, Harper didn’t go on any vacation; however, she’s been pretty busy doing her own thing. Apparently she’s been working on some school project? Summer classes or something, is what she told me before. I think she wants some extra credit to raise her GPA before she graduates, though I hardly doubt she has anything less than a 4.0.

“Bri, hi,” Harper says as a smile tugs on her lips, “Hey, Morgan. What did I miss?”

“Flynn has a boyfriend!” Bri blurts, “Oops, I wasn’t supposed to say anything.”
