Vampire dad in the crosshairs
"Matthias is just a vampire Dad looking out for his precocious adopted human daughter. Once the nobility figures out how much he cares for her, they can't help but wrap her into their schemes. Said Dad gets continually pulled around by the chain as a haunted past and current desire to protect his daughter are used against him again and again. I appreciate that Kristen keeps the story clean and uses plenty of humor (mostly Matthias reactions to the poor hand he is dealt). Unwelcome house guests and a "fake" wedding date all add to his misery. Matthias is characterized well along with Amora and Anar. The other characters are developed enough that you can predict how they'll respond. There are also very nice pencil sketches at the start to assist in visualization. Fight sequences could use a bit more development, as I was occasionally lost trying to discern that was happening. Main plot is, however, communicated well. BOLD is used for mental dialogue, All caps are a bit overused and sometimes make the sentences a bit clunky to read. There are the occasional missing small words common to independent authors, but they only affected the meaning one time. There are several plot twists to keep things interesting. The plot is generally solid, be prepared to find reasons after the events, as that is Kristen's preferred style of story telling. "

"I’m really enjoying this universe!!! The opening is pretty strong!!! The pacing and the narrative are beautiful and on point. I especially love the variety of characters, each with their own awesome power systems. The blend of fantasy and gothic atmosphere is incredibly pleasant.
