Chapter One

Hazel’s POV

“We are now boarding passengers for flight QS18934 to Melbourne Australia.”

I stand up and get in the line.

Today I was moving across the world to live with my grandma. I still couldn’t wrap my head around it. I haven’t even seen her since I was like ten. That was eight years ago!

All because my dad got charged for sexual assault. Turns out he isn’t the man i thought he was. Women from his work spoke up and told the truth about him.

The stories were so vile, I had nightmares for a week.

And I’ve never met my mum. She died giving birth to me. It makes me wonder if she was actually a victim to my dad.

I clutch my stomach and hold in the puke that wants to come out.

I pass my ticket to the flight attendant, and she scans it before, passing it back.

I go through the gates and walk across the grid to the plane. I set myself up in my seat and plop down beside an older lady.

She did not look too pleased that I was sitting next to her.

After another fifteen minutes goes by and the plane starts moving. I grab my headphones out of my bag and put them on, blaring my music.

Two seconds later I feel a tap on my shoulder.

I turn to the lady next to me. “You can’t have your phone on.”

“It’s on Airplane Mode,” I state.

She glares at me. “It’s bad for the plane.”

“How do you know that?” I ask. “You work on airplanes?”

She grunts and turns away from me.

Dumb bitch.

When I get to baggage claim I see my grandma straight away. She has not changed one bit. She wore some black sweatpants, a red sweater and of course her sandals.

She loved those things.

As soon as I get to her, she pulls me in for a hug. “I’m so sorry,” she says. “I swear I never knew he was like this.”

“It’s okay grandma,” I say.

“Are you hungry? We can grab some lunch?”

“Sure,” I murmur.

We grab my luggage and head out the door, to her minivan.

Yes, my grandma is one of those people.

“What do you feel like?” Grandma asks.

“I don’t mind,” I answer.

“Your very quiet compared to the last time I saw you,” grandma says. “Last time you were here you couldn’t stop talking about your pet hamster, George.”

I smile softly. Man, I loved that hamster. He died cause my dad's dog decided to eat him.

“You start school on Monday,” she says. “I think you're really going to like it, I’ve got your uniform and everything.”

My eyes widen. “Uniform?”

She giggles. “Schools in Australia wear uniforms Hazel.”

Oh, cry me a river.

My uniform consisted of a white button up with the school logo on the right side of my chest, a green and black plaid skirt that went down to about mid-thigh and a pair of heeled black lace ups.

My first morning at my new school, consisted of the principal giving me a tour of the grounds, telling me the rules of the school and showing me to my locker.

“It’s recess now, so get familiar with your timetable,” the principal says.

I frown. “What the hell is recess?”

“Right your American,” she says. “It’s a twenty-minute break.”

“And then we get another lunch, plus study period?” I question.

“No study line,” she says. “Study is done in your own time.”

Right.

She leaves me by myself, so I wander down the hall. I notice a bunch of girls huddled up together, staring at me and giggling.

I glare at them. “Are you talking about me?”

The leader, I’m presuming since she gives off a bitch vibe with her blonde hair up in a ponytail steps up. “We were just talking about why your here,” she states. “We all heard about your daddy who raped all those girls.”

“What about it?” I snap.

“We were just saying that it might run in the genes,” she says. “So, the boys better protect themselves.”

“Whatever,” I mutter. I walk off and hear them all starting to giggle again. I go into the girls' restrooms and splash my face with water. “Who the hell does she think she is?” I mutter to myself.

“That’s Anna College.” I jump at the voice and turn around, clutching the sink. The girl smiles at me and waves. She has red hair and green eyes and wore glasses on the brim of her nose. “Hey, I’m Frankie,” she says.

“I’m Hazel,” I murmur. “Are you friends with that Anna?”

She scoffs. “Hell No, that bitch would rather choke on her perfect hair before befriending me.”

I chuckle. “Yeah, she’s not the nicest person I’ve met.”

“Is this your first day?” She asks. She walks over to me and starts washing her hands. “I don’t think I’ve seen your face before.”

“No, I’m new,” I say. “I moved from America.”

“No shit,” she says.

“I’m sorry?”

“No shit as in that’s awesome,” she says. “Hazel you're going to need to learn Aussie slang if you're going to live here.”

“Right,” I murmur.

She walks to the door and then turns to me. “Are you coming?”

I nod quickly and follow her out the door.
