Histoire 1 : Crocs dans la neige

La neige tombe en rideaux si denses qu’elle efface le monde au-delà de trois mètres. Tom est assis sur le banc en plastique de l’arrêt de bus, les genoux ramenés contre sa poitrine. La lampe au-dessus de lui clignote – tic… tic… tic… Autour, les champs. Noirs. Interminables. Pas une lumière, pas une silhouette, pas même le grondement lointain d’un tracteur. Rien que le vent qui fait frémir les épis morts. Tom n’a jamais eu peur du noir – pas vraiment – mais ce soir-là est différent. Il écoute. Il consulte sa montre. 23 h 12. Le dernier bus aurait dû passer depuis vingt-sept minutes. Il aurait dû être chez lui, à prendre le repas en famille, à rire des films d’horreur trop vieux pour lui.

Au lieu de cela, il est seul, le souffle court, les doigts engourdis dans ses gants. Un craquement. Léger. Tom se raidit. Il scrute la pénombre. Rien. Juste les flocons qui dansent comme des insectes blancs. Un autre craquement. Plus proche. Puis un troisième, régulier. Tom se lève d’un bond, le cœur cognant. Il colle son visage à la vitre fêlée de l’abri. Dehors, une silhouette émerge. Petite. Capuche rabattue. Écharpe rouge vif. Le visage peint en squelette – orbites creusées de noir, dents blanches.

Le gamin s’arrête à l’entrée de l’abri, les mains dans les poches, et sourit. « Salut. T’aimes Halloween ? » demande-t-il d’une voix douce.

Tom déglutit. « Ouais. Les bonbons. Mais c’est après-demain ! »

Le squelette rit. Un rire d’enfant… Il s’assoit à côté de Tom. Son épaule frôle la sienne, et Tom sent un froid qui n’a rien à voir avec la neige.

« Moi, je ne pourrai plus aller chercher des friandises dans les maisons. C’est dommage. Quand j’y allais, je préférais taper aux portes des vieux. »

Tom observe ce visage juvénile. Pourquoi dit-il qu’il ne pourra plus jamais ? Le gamin, pensif, poursuit : « Tu sais, les vieux, ils oublient d’en acheter. »

Le gamin sort un billet froissé de sa poche, le déplie sous la lumière clignotante.

« Alors, pour se faire pardonner, ils te filent ça. T’en veux ? Je sais où en trouver. Y a une maison, là-bas. »

Il pointe du doigt les champs. Tom recule contre la paroi.

« Quelle maison ? Il n’y a rien là-bass. »

Le sourire du gamin s’élargit. « Allez, viens. C’est vraiment tout près, et puis je ne peux pas te laisser là tout seul dans le froid si le bus ne passe pas ce soir ! Et puis je me sentirai un peu moins seul, enfermé là-bas. »

Tom secoue la tête. « J’attends le bus. » Le sourire s’efface. Lentement. Les yeux noirs semblent s’enfoncer davantage dans les orbites peintes. La voix change – plus grave.

« Alors tu viens… ou il faut que je te traîne jusque-là-bas ? »

Tom bondit sur ses pieds. Il se retourne.
