Summary

Jones is a young man from a poor background. One day while playing football, he is wrongly accused of stealing after trying to retrieve the ball from a compound. He is severely beaten and imprisoned, and his community struggles to pay a ransom for his release. Years later, after studying abroad, Jones returns as an accountant without holding any grudges. He visits the family that imprisoned him, who are now facing financial troubles and plans to leave the country. He persuades them to stay and helps them regain their wealth and influence. However, this leads to conflicts, especially when Mr. Acra proposes his daughter Lara to Jones. Although Lara loves Jones, he rejects the idea and finds a lookalike to satisfy her mother’s demands. When Lara discovers this, tensions rise. Mr. Acra confronts them after learning about his wife's involvement in helping Jones launch his businesses. During a confrontation, Lara intervenes and is shot, dying from the injury. Mr. Acra's wife dies from shock. Ultimately, Mr. Acra faces mob justice, while Jones is left to care for Mr. Acra's children.

Chapter 1

ACT I

SCENE ONE

(At Mr. Accra’s Home-based Mansion.

Little Town, Abinwo City. Jones is standing in front of Mr. Accra’s mansion. He ponders to himself.)

JONES

I have to leave; they will not give a chance to that. What if I remain, what is going to be my next step? Surely disastrous to the mighty family who now boast of their achievements after having almost lost everything they thought they owned before I stepped in. Now they want me as a commodity, who ought to be at their service for an eternity.

(Shakes his wrist to turn over his platinum watch shaded by the edges of his cream-white suit. ‘KWING,’ as the watch turns over. He glances at it, let us go and of his briefcase and stares at façade.)

Do I move in and become a member of this family or to depart and start my own company faraway. Mr. Accra will never allow me go free. He has now become a politician and will not wish to have business rivals around the country no matter how far away. Such an old greedy bulldog! He desires to go across the continent as well. Old bastard, I will give him just what he deserves.

MR. ACCRA

(Watching from a window, upstairs)

It seems our boy has decided to make the right decision. Leaving this mansion to go combat me in the market field is going to be a big taboo. I gave him everything, what makes him think he

will just leave us like that. He belongs to us. I made him rich, wealthy and famous. I have a great boon to his life. Who knows, tomorrow when I become president I might even make him my Secretary of State. Moreover, I even want to give him my daughter for a wife. The silly kid just thinks he can walk away from it all to challenge me with his own empire. Silly boy! Such a dream will never come true.

Mme. ACCRA

I told you I no longer trust that boy. He has been acting very strangely for the past six months. He

barely eats at home, worst when Lara cooks for him and tries to serve him. I hate the way he relates with those commoners on the street and with the workers. He treats them as if they are our equals. Who does he think he is? Trying to gain the attention of those things. What do they have to give him, who is the real politician here, you my husband or him?

MR. ACCRA

Never mind my darling. Just give him some time. He might still be amazed by all what we have offered. Perhaps he needs more time to adjust to our lifestyle of wealth and glory. Bring to me

my wine; woman. The one I drink every afternoon before going to have a nap. Don‟ t worry much about the boy.

(Jones walks in. Mr. Accra turns sideways on his arm chair to address him)

MR. ACCRA

Well done my boy, I know you always make the right decisions. Now go lie in your quarters and

Take a rest. I could have spared my naptime to have a chat with you but since I have to attend to some political issues, I will see you only in the evening. We will have a lot to talk about then. You

may go for now. A servant girl would have your favourite dish ready by the time you are up. (Jones quietly leaves the hall).
