Chapter 1: Mermaid

The water around her was warm, unusually warm. And there she saw him. Far back from the water’s edge was a man. He wasn’t very tall, his frame only reaching midway to the doorframe behind him. She’d spotted him when he’d exited the shack, stepping out into the bright afternoon sun. the sun that could easily expose her if she wasn’t careful. So sinking down to where only her eyes poked above the surface, she watched. Her gaze studied the short man. His bright orange hair was unusual to her. She’d never seen someone with such a vibrant colour of hair.

Then her gaze was snatched by another. A man, taller than the first, appeared behind him. his larger frame having to lean down to exit the building. Now this piqued her interest. His skin shone almost like pearls when held to the light. She liked pearls. Focusing closer on the man of interest, she saw that his eyes were brown, matching the hair.Hmm, she thought. His body looked strong, and he was what Nubella said the human girls found attractive. So with those thoughts in mind, she had made her pick.

The pair looked to know each other as they were chatting in a language she didn’t understand. Brushing that aside, she moved to get out of the water, and then the shorter man, when he stepped out of the shade, she gasped. His hair glowed. Or... at least it looked like it glowed. She’d never seen something like this before. She stared, as if entranced by the colours. It looked...like a fire. She’d only ever seen a fire atop the ships that passed by, a fire she had longed to touch.

without even realizing she was halfway out of the water. Her only indication of so was when she felt something hug her rear; grunting at the discomfort, she pulled the long black locks forward to cover her front. Then she was knee-deep in the salty waves, till only her pale feet touched water.

eyes never leaving the men. To be exact, never leaving the orange-haired man. Without realising it, her pick had changed, and she was making her way towards him right now. passing by a few crabs that scuttled away into their homes. They seemed to be the only other living things on the beach.

Making it halfway up the beach, she heard a gasp. eyes tearing away from the fire like curls, landed on the noise’s origin. The men... they were staring at her. frozen and staring back. A few seconds of silence followed. Then the shorter one spoke.

“Um...excuse me, miss? Are you okay?” he asked. His voice calling out to her carried the note of worry. Carrissa frowned. She didn’t understand what he was saying. She moved to tell him so when the taller man stepped out of the shack, where she hadn’t noticed he’d disappeared back into. Something white flashed in his hands, but she couldn’t tell what it was. Her eyes stayed glued to the shorter man. Now that she was closer, the colours in his hair shone brighter. It wasn’t just orange but also gold and red. This intrigued her; she moved forward again but stopped when the large figure appeared beside her. Then her eyes broke away.

shrinking back when the taller man, who had some sort of white membrane in his hands, was saying something while motioning forward to wrap it around her. That’s when she realised. She was naked. The memory of Nubela telling her that humans didn’t like to be naked played through her mind. She thought it was ...silly. She, however, let the man wrap the membrane around her. it felt like a jellyfish had hugged her. The man’s hands were warm against her skin. the feeling sending shivers through her. He kept saying something in a language she didn’t understand.

The buzzing of his words was drowned out when the orange locks appeared before her again. snatching her gaze away. She reached out to touch it.

“Cassian. I don’t think she understands me,” the one man spoke. He had tied the sheet in a knot around her waist. He stepped back, analysing her. The other, Cassian, replied while leaning away from the pale, thin hands reaching for his head.“Where do you think she came from?” A bronze hand caught the pale ones as he asked, “Miss? He called out. “Miss??“. a frown etched onto his face, then he looked down at the hands in his. “She’s freezing cold. Feel,” he said to the man beside him. motioning him over.

When a second pair of hands grazed hers, she pulled hers back, clutching them to her chest. just as the taller one said something. Growing irritated with waiting, she spoke. demanding the shorter one to follow her. They both just stared at her, eyes wide. She spoke again, this time more frustrated. She was tired of waiting, and her body was too. The looks on their faces told her that they still didn’t understand a single word she said.

Cassian opened his mouth to speak but was cut off when the girl let out a quick shriek. Confused by the noise, he froze. Every muscle in his body stood still. the hairs on his back and the twitch in his eye, everything went so still. It was like a predator had appeared. The feeling of fear kicked in, triggering his fight or flight, but he couldn’t move. He tried to call out to Joel, but he couldn’t speak. His mouth refused to move. Every part of his being was focused on the beautiful women in front of him.

Her eyes that were once black now glowed purple. The paleness she had appeared to them with was now gone. her skin no longer holding the greyish pallor, now a warm tan brown. The once sickly face was now sharp and just as beautiful, and that’s when he realised. She was doing this to him; she was causing every muscle in his body to constrict. Then bright, raw fear crawled into the pit of his stomach. His heart raced, tracking blood to muscles that wouldn’t move. He was stuck, left to the fate of this... this...

She hit him. A sandy thud was the only indication that Joel had gone down next to him. He hadn’t even seen her move. He panicked and assumed his friend was in the same situation as him. Was she going to kill them? was all his thoughts circled to. But then she did something else completely.

Her song travelled through her vocal cords into the ears of the orange one. The soothing melody, which she had practised a million times before, tickled past her lips. she moved then, placing her hands onto his shoulders She whispered the last of her song to him. The effects were already taking place when he began to clutch onto her. His hands grappled at the sheet around her, pulling to get it off. She laughed. joy filling her when she knew her song had worked.

She whispered things to the man until water surrounded their shoulders. He looked lost in her eyes. his hands clutching to her as she brought them deeper into the water. She leaned forward and placed a kiss on his lips before she pushed down. and she drowned him. And she watched the orange curls glint under the surface.
