Chapter 1

I flung open the door as I stepped outside. The cool night breeze blew through my blue hair. Yes, you heard right, my hair is a shade of light blue. While many people could just dye their hair, mine and my sister’s are naturally a weird color. While my hair is sky blue, my sister’s is pink.

“Luna?”

The voice cut through my thoughts. It was Kyra’s. Kyra is my sister. I glanced back at her. She was wearing an evening gown. It was pure white, so it brought out her bright pink eyes. Her hair was left freely, just like mine, and it blew in the wind, bending to its will, which I loved so much.

“What are you doing out here now?” she asked.

“I could ask you the same,” I said. “Did you follow, Kyra?”

“No,” she replied. “You weren’t in bed, Luna, so I figured you’d be here. Now answer my question.”

“I wasn’t sleepy.”

Kyra laughed, and walked up to the edge of the terrace, where I was perched, and sat with me there. She put a loving arm around me.

“You’re never sleepy, Luna,” she said. “It’s 4:30 in the morning. The sun is going to rise in a while.”

“You’re right,” I told her. “The moon is sleepy.”

I looked at the sky. It almost immediately changed color. The stars slowly disappeared. Streaks of blue, green, pink, and yellow filling it. The sun peeked over the horizon, but the moon hadn’t set yet. Unconsciously, I grinned. I knew Kyra was grinning too, sitting beside me.

“Twilight,” we both sighed.

“LUNA!” boomed a voice. “Kyra!”

I smacked my head. Kyra got up, smiling. Dorm Master Spencer was calling us down. The sun had risen at 5:00 AM today. It was earlier than usual, much earlier than usual.

“Come on Luna, let’s get going,” Kyra said. “Master Spencer’s gonna kill us.”

I nodded as I got up and followed. I smiled at my big sister. We climbed down the narrow staircase, laughing as we talked. We went through the dorms, where Master Spencer was waiting.

“Ah,” he said, seeing us two. “You’re here. Where were you anyway?”

“We were on the terrace,” Kyra told him. He chuckled.

“I should have known,” he said. “You’ve been going up there since you were four. That was two years after we brought you to the orphanage.”

“Well, let’s just say that we love being near the sky,” I said.

“Alrighty then, why don’t you two go and eat,” Master Spencer said. “Happy birthday Luna, by the way.”

Happy birthday? Oh right! Today was my sixteenth birthday. I can’t believe I forgot my own birthday!

“Oh yeah!” Kyra said. “Happy birthday Lu! Sorry I didn’t say it earlier.”

“Thanks Kyra,” I said, beaming. “Now how about we go eat?”

We walked to the dining hall, which was swarming with kids ready to eat. It was illuminated by candles and the food smelled extra good. I grabbed a tray and ran to eat, Kyra behind me.

“Hello Mrs. Higgins,” I told the lunch lady. “What’s for breakfast?”

“Mashed potatoes, fish fingers, grilled cheese sandwiches and milk,” she replied.

“Mmmm!” I said in delight. “I’ll have all of them.”

“Me too,” Kyra said.

Mrs. Higgins served us all the items, putting them in our trays. We walked away and say at an empty table. Our table. I munched on my sandwiches, while Kyra hers. After I was done, I put my tray in the bin. Kyra did the same. We were about to leave, when a guy came up to me.

“Luna,” he said. “The headmistress would like to see you and your sister.”

Headmistress Gwen? Us? But why us? I quickly told Kyra and ran off. We walked the narrow, winding corridors till the headmistress’s quarters. We knocked on her door.

“Come in.”
