CHAPTER 1: The City Of Shadows
The sun was setting over the historic streets of New Orleans, casting a warm orange glow over the French Quarter. The air was alive with the sounds of jazz music and the scent of beignets wafting from the nearby cafes. Charlotte, a seasoned tour guide, navigated the crowded streets with ease, her eyes scanning the colorful facades of the buildings.
She had given tours of the city for years, and she knew every inch of the French Quarter like the back of her hand. But tonight felt different somehow. The air seemed charged with an electric energy, and Charlotte couldn’t shake the feeling that something was about to change.
As she rounded a corner, she saw a man standing near the entrance of a small alleyway, his back to her. He was tall and lean, dressed in a dark suit that seemed out of place among the tourists in shorts and t-shirts. Charlotte’s curiosity was piqued, and she felt a sudden urge to approach him.
“Good evening,” she said, her voice carrying across the street. “Can I help you find something?”
The man turned to face her, and Charlotte was struck by his piercing blue eyes and chiseled features. He seemed to be studying her, his gaze intense and unrelenting.
“I’m looking for a tour of the city,” he said in a deep, velvety voice that sent shivers down Charlotte’s spine.
