Chapter 1 Margo’s Escape

Margo tapped the pencil eraser against her lips as she appeared to ponder the answer to a mathmatics equation. Her gaze facing downward to the paper lying before her. She was in her second year of college trigonometry classes and while these classes might be hard for some they were not for Margo.

From an early age Margo had quickly figured out she had an affinity for numbers, math equations and any scenario that had a number to it.

But for now she just appeared to be pondering the math equation. She did not want Bruno or James, the two body guards her parents had hired to watch her, to garner any idea that anything was amiss.

Margo was actually waiting. Caught up in her own thoughts she was startled when a commotion could be heard somewhere outside the apartment and down the hall.

“Stay here Miss Margo while we go see what’s going on,” yelled Bruno motioning at Margo to stay put and then hastily following James out of the study.

“Yeah, sure,” replied Margo waving a slim hand in his direction and appeared to engross herself back into her math homework.

But as soon as both men disappeared Margo sprang into action. She grabbed a small bag she had stashed in the bottom desk drawer during one of the rare moments she had been left alone. She snatched a sweater off the back of the chair and quickly made her way to the door.

Glancing around swiftly and seeing no one she tiptoed as quietly and deftly as she could down the hall and to the apartment door. Pausing just briefly to make sure the hall was clear she ran as fast as she could to the elevator. She had only minutes, if not mere seconds, to make her escape. She ran as if the devil himself was after her and indeed in some way it was as if the devil was after her but she didn’t have time to think about that right now.

She made it to the elevator, slipping inside only after giving her neighbor, Mary, a quick hug and kiss on the cheek.

Mary had no idea what was going on with Margo but knew deep in her heart that something was definitely not right with Margo’s situation at home and was only too willing to run interference for Margo when the time came.

“I won’t forget this Mary,” whispered Margo giving Mary one last hug.

“Go, go quickly child,” said Mary pushing a wad of money into Margo’s bag. She quickly left the elevator and picked up a bag of groceries she had stashed just outside the elevator doors and ripped the bag spilling its contents onto the floor. She was hoping this would buy Margo a few extra minutes.

Inside the elevator Margo looked at Mary with a deep sadness piercing her bright blue eyes. She would find a way some day to repay this elderly woman’s kindness. But first she had to get away. Get away quickly and get away alive!

Margo quickly pushed the button for the ground floor while at the same time pulling her black sweater over her shoulders and onto her body. The body guards would be looking for her wearing a blue dress. She was hoping by changing her appearance slightly she could buy a few more seconds . Margo quickly pulled her hair into a ponytail and then into a messy bun.

When the elevator hit the first floor main lobby Margo made a mad dash for the door. Fate was on her side today because the Door Man didn’t even look up from helping the Johnston’s with their luggage from their return trip abroad as she slipped by.

Margo paused only briefly as she stepped out into the brisk autumn air in upper Manhattan. Taking in only a brief glance around Margo walked quickly to the corner. She was intending on crossing over to the other side of the street at the street corner when she heard a commotion behind her.

“Damn it,” muttered Margo glancing surreptitiously over her shoulder only to see Bruno and James burst out the lobby door.

James was the brain between the duo and Bruno was the brawn. Both men wore black suits and ties and were the epitme of the typical body guard. But Margo knew these men could be ruthless.

Glancing back to the front Margo could see a Lincoln Town car just ahead. She prayed silently to herself and rushed towards the rear passenger door. Clutching the door handle she gave it a quick pull. To her relief it was unlocked. She quickly slipped inside.

Inside was a young business man engrossed in a newspaper. Startled he looked up into Margo’s blue eyes. Margo took in his piercing grey eyes. Those eyes. Margo was mesmerized but was snapped back into reality upon hearing a commotion a couple car lengths back.

Without a second thought Margo quickly slid over to the stranger, pulled his arms around her, and quickly placed her lips softly against his. At that moment, it was as if two lovers were embracing before each headed off to start their work day.

As Bruno and James approached the Town car the couple pulled each other tighter into their embrace oblivious to the outside world. The traffic light turned green and the town car pulled forward. It was several lights later before the couple finally broke apart. Seeing they were no longer in the same spot. Margo moved to the door.

“Stop!” barked the young man.

Margo glanced back at him with a startled look in her eyes.

His voice softened. “Don’t go,” he whispered.

Margo’s gaze warmed. She took his hand. “I can’t. You would be in danger,” she whispered.

The young man’s gaze hardened. “What’s your name?” he asked softly.

A glint appeared in Margo’s blue eyes. “Remember the name Paige,” she murmured and then quickly disappeared out the door.
