Chapter 1: The New Arrival

The bus hissed to a stop in front of Eden Academy, a sprawling campus of ivy-covered stone buildings that looked more like a castle than a school. Students in crisp uniforms scattered across the lawns, laughing and whispering in tight cliques.

Zara adjusted her backpack, trying to steady the nervous flutter in her chest. New schools were terrifying enough, but Eden Academy—with its reputation for elite scholars and impossible standards—was something else entirely.

Her transfer had been sudden. One day she was at her small-town school, the next she was being thrust into a world where every student seemed to have been born with a perfect pedigree—and an equally perfect smile.

She stepped off the bus, letting her eyes sweep over the manicured lawns, the fountains that glittered like liquid silver, and the long corridors of the main building where she knew students had already mastered their social hierarchies. Impressive, she thought. Intimidating. And terrifying.

The heavy oak doors of the administration building swung open, and a tall boy with sharp features and glasses stepped out, holding a stack of papers. His gaze caught hers for a fraction of a second, and something unspoken passed between them—curiosity, maybe judgment, maybe… interest.

“You must be Zara,” said the girl at the reception desk, looking up from her phone. “Welcome to Eden. Orientation is at 3 PM. Try not to get lost.”

Zara nodded, muttering a quiet “thank you,” but her mind was already racing. Lost? She had a feeling she’d be lucky to survive the first week.

As she walked toward the dormitories, she passed groups of students, each radiating a confidence she didn’t feel. Some whispered, some stared, and one girl even gave her a small, calculating smile that sent a shiver down Zara’s spine. New girl. Mystery girl. Scholarship girl.

Across the courtyard, the boy with glasses—whose piercing green eyes seemed to measure her like a puzzle—watched quietly before walking off. Rival genius, probably, she guessed. Something about him radiated challenge, the kind of challenge that made your stomach tighten and your curiosity spike at the same time.

By the time she reached the dormitory, her legs were tired, but her mind refused to slow. The room was small, but cozy, with sunlight streaming through tall windows and casting a golden glow on the neat bed and desk. A wardrobe sat against the wall, and a small notice pinned above the desk read: “Welcome to your new home, Edenites.”

Zara unpacked slowly, arranging her few belongings with care. Her phone buzzed—an unfamiliar number. She hesitated, then answered.

“Hello?”

“Zara? This is Kai. Don’t freak out, but you’re officially on my radar now.” His voice was calm, but there was an edge to it, like a warning.

Zara blinked. “Kai…?”

“The green-eyes-and-glasses guy from the courtyard,” he said casually, as if that explained everything. “I hope you’re ready for Eden. It’s… not what you think.”

Her stomach flipped. “I think I’ll survive,” she said, though the tremor in her voice betrayed her.

“Good. Because it’s going to be interesting. Very interesting.”

The line went dead. Zara stared at her phone, unsure if she should be annoyed, curious… or both.

Later, at orientation, the principal gave a grandiose speech about excellence, tradition, and “the Eden legacy.” Students nodded politely, but Zara noticed the subtle glances, the small smirks, the undercurrent of rivalry. She realized quickly that Eden Academy wasn’t just a school—it was a battlefield, and everyone was armed with charm, intelligence, and secrets.

By the time the speech ended, Zara had made her first decision: survive at all costs.

And maybe… just maybe, figure out why Kai had singled her out before anyone else had even said hello.

As the sun dipped behind the academy’s gothic spires, Zara felt a thrill she hadn’t felt in a long time. This was going to be a year unlike any other.
