A Quiet Kind of Harshness

"Reading this book was a painful experience—not necessarily in a negative way. There was a description in the book that felt almost perfectly suited to the entire work: “as if the author is bleeding onto the page.” And honestly, I sometimes felt like the author suffered even more than the reader while writing it. Remembering and dwelling on so many painful and unpleasant things can’t be easy. The writing isn’t cruel, exactly, but it is harsh—and its harshness doesn’t come with noise or spectacle. It is quiet, persistent, and difficult to escape. Almost every page felt filled with pleading, grief, and difficult emotions. What struck me most was that the author rarely tried to balance them with anything comforting. Even when a little hope appeared, it was quickly met with doubt or cold reasoning. Even by the end, the book seemed reluctant to fully acknowledge that something had been gained after everything that happened. Instead, we are left with that same cold certainty: yes, I am alive. I am still living."
