Chapter 1 shadows of the night
London slept, unaware of the empire perched high above its streets. Inside the top floor of Blackwood Enterprises, Vivienne Blackwood sat motionless behind her desk, a queen surveying her kingdom. The city lights reflected off the glass walls, casting fractured shadows across the office—shadows she felt more comfortable with than any human presence.
Reports lay before her. Threats. From rivals. From family. From anyone foolish enough to think they could touch her. Vivienne’s fingers drummed lightly against the desk, precise, controlled. She did not flinch. She did not panic. She did not allow mistakes—ever.
A soft chime sliced through the silence. The elevator doors slid open. He appeared.
Damien Kane.
Silent. Imposing. Exact in every movement. His presence filled the room without a sound, every step measured, every breath contained. He didn’t speak immediately. He didn’t need to. Vivienne noticed. She always noticed.
Finally, he spoke. Calm. Controlled. “Ms. Blackwood. I’ve reviewed the threats. Nothing will reach you under my watch.”
Vivienne’s gaze was sharp, cutting. “I don’t need protection from incompetence,” she said smoothly, her words colder than the steel skyline outside. “I need results. No excuses. No mistakes. Understood?”
“Understood,” he replied, voice steady, betraying nothing.
Her eyes lingered on him, calculating, assessing. He was flawless. Too flawless. A weapon disguised in calm perfection. Not a hair out of place. Not a gesture wasted.
The city hummed below, indifferent to the tension in this office. Yet inside, Vivienne could feel the weight of what was coming—threats that would not wait for morning, enemies who would not hesitate. And she would be ready. She always was.
Damien Kane remained still, unreadable. The air between them was taut, a line drawn with invisible steel. In his silence, he promised vigilance, obedience… and something else, something unspoken that Vivienne would not yet allow herself to acknowledge.
The night stretched long and merciless. Outside, shadows moved in the streets. Inside, a different darkness waited. And Vivienne Blackwood would meet it, alone, unyielding, untouchable.
What kind of threats do you think Vivienne is facing?
