Fulfilling his Promise

Summary

Chase made a promise to her when they were young, before he was forced to leave her by order of the king who wanted to rid their land of malevolent spirits infesting the kingdom. He became a Spirit Hunter, and Maya patiently waited for him for ten years until she could not wait anymore. Chase returned that very night she gave up on him, but he was different...altered somehow. He spoke in different tongues sometimes, his eyes changed colors, and his personality shifted with them...as if he was an entirely different person...or creature. Somewhere in the dangerous mix of spirits that have taken hold of him, Maya hoped to get her beloved back, but it was not going to be easy as she came to know the entities inside him. And then there would be an impossible choice to make: Keep them all trapped inside his body---all of them miserable and volatile but relatively safe for everyone...or set her friends free---at the cost of Chase's life.

Prologue ~ Window to the soul

“I release you from your promise—”

Without a warning, I suddenly find myself pinned against the wall, Chase’s hand around my neck as he glares at me with eyes glowing an unholy red, and a furious snarl twisting his face into something feral and almost unrecognizable.

All I can do is stare at him in absolute horror, flinching when he silences me with a growl that doesn’t sound like it belongs to a human.

In my desperation, I try clawing at his arm, the one pressing me to the wall, almost choking me while his other hand is gripping one of my arms and pulling me towards him, his nails digging painfully onto my skin.

“N-No… please!”

I watch his eyes flicker with strange glowing colors, changing over and over again. Not just red but also green, purple, blue... golden hues that seem to glow like embers and once even turn completely white before becoming a terrifying shade of light-devouring black. Then I see him turn that fury inwards… and for a few precious seconds, he seems to struggle internally for control. Not long after, the color of his eyes finally reverts to its normal brown, looking back at me with an equal amount of horror as he realizes what he has done.

He releases me instantly and backs away as if burned.

“I… It wasn’t me—I didn’t—Oh, damn it!” He glares at his hands in disgust, turning away from me and striding towards the door, wrenching it open and hurrying outside, almost as if the fires of hell were licking his boots. The sky chooses that moment to open its flood gates, and rain goes down as if giants were pouring buckets of water from above, but Chase walks right into the downpour, disappearing behind the dancing curtain of rain and strong winds.

My back slides down the wall, and I clutch my trembling hands to my aching throat, staring in disbelief at the door… utterly bewildered and rattled by what had occurred.

What the hell just happened!?
