"I'll be honest with you. I am not a vampire girl. I have never been a vampire girl. I write contemporary romance and my idea of supernatural is when someone falls in love faster than is statistically reasonable. So when I tell you this book pulled me in and held me there, please understand what that means coming from me. I came in at book two, which I will defend as a legitimate strategy because I firmly believe the second book is where everything gets serious. P.J. proved me right. What stopped me in my tracks was the structure. Three point of view characters, three completely distinct voices, and P.J. nails every single one of them. I mean genuinely nails them. Each chapter reads like a different person wrote it, which is exactly how it should feel and almost nobody actually pulls it off. You always know exactly whose head you're in, and more importantly, you always care about being there. The romance at the center of this story is the kind that makes you believe these two people are actually built for each other, not just told they are. And the third character, the wildcard, is honestly one of the most compelling presences I've read in a long time. I am not saying another word about her. This isn't really a vampire book. It's a book about loyalty, identity, and two people trying to hold their world together while everything around them pulls at the seams. The fangs are almost incidental. P.J. Serrano can write.
