The Mysterious Prowler
I have been in many strange circumstances, but so far this is one of the oddest things that’s ever occurred in my gaming life. My name is Wyn OR Shepard (but my Alias in the world of gaming is Shepard) which is my Alias in gaming. I’m no detective nor investigator, but I do have a knack in uncovering mysteries thanks to the power of technology and my… odd abilities of finding the truth. (I am not The Sherlock Holmes of modern society/times, but rather discovering the truth is my true calling.) Not a Sherlock Holmes in modern times, but rather the fascination of discovering the truth has been my true calling.
On October 15th 2024, we got a mystery in our hands in the virtual world of online gaming. Something I didn’t expect myself to get caught myself into. Immersing myself in the PC gaming world has been my pastime. In fact, a lot of my social interactions come from the online universe due to the (constant evolution of) technology, arising making it a lot easier to meet people of similar interest for instance, gaming. But I’m no Computer Goblin, I do outside activities and I’m an avid filmmaker.
Let’s talk about Samantha, a friend I knew for 5 years in the gaming world, and is quite active in the world of Twitch Streaming.
Samantha is a variety streamer who’s been a twitch partner/ affiliated with an affiliate on Twitch with 5000 followers with concurrent viewers of 60s to a 100s. She has fun with it and monetizes it but more as a side hustle and not enough to quit her shitty job. I did some modding work for her, but not as active compared to the other mods who are with her throughout whenever she streams. Since I’m… a bit addicted to Helldivers 2 recently. Oh and can’t forget about Space Marines 2.
It was the time Samantha streamed Overwatch 2, an intense 5v5 multiplayer arena battle. We regularly play it mostly off-stream. She either streams with a viewer who benefitted from the rewards system to play with Samantha, and so far they’ve been chill. Other times there’s been dudes seeking out to constantly play with her like everyday. Typical gamer dudes reaction to girls playing their favorite games, nothing new. What eventually caught our surprise is the mysterious player known as Prowler.
Prowler was a Master’s Overwatch 2 player who Duo’d with Samantha recently. He was silent, only typed, and his gameplay was second-to-none. Samantha enjoyed his company due to his gameplay skills and witty text chat response. I was there on the stream and it seemed normal throughout.
Until…
Samantha DM’d the main friend group I was in about the Prowler who apparently found her discord. She didn’t think much of it since she kept it in her Twitch Bio which the mods reminded her to remove. Prowler’s DM text to her seemed normal and was just thanking her for the invites as well as the games he had with her. Of course something was more to that unless Samantha wouldn’t drag me to a discord call,
“Wyn, can you hear me?” Samantha initiated a call.
“Yeah, Sam, it’s not Zoom, I can hear you loud and clear,” I replied to her.
“Bonjour, Bonjour” Sebastian spoke, who apparently was invited as well.
“Ah Sebastian, great timing. When are you getting Helldivers 2?” I asked.
“So Samantha, what seems to be the problem?” Sebastian shrugged off my question.
“Hi guys!” Alicia came into the voice chat seemingly excited. “Sorry if I’m late, I just finished my runway.”
“Hi all, and Alicia you look stunning!” Allaine got into the VC, and commented on Alicia’s dazzling discord profile photo.
“Aw thank you!” Alicia seems appreciated.
Bruno got into the VC. “Can’t talk, currently driving home but I can listen.” He typed. “Samantha, is everything okay?”
“So the Prowler, the guy who I was playing with…” She mysteriously spoke.
“He’s in love with you. Of course Samantha, what did you expect” Sebastian laughed.
“Don’t meet guys like Shepard. Meeting new girls every week!”
“At least I meet girls every week…” I chuckled as well as Allaine.
“Cuz Shepard a lady’s man!” Alicia pointed out. “Sorry for the segue, Sam, please tell us more.”
Samantha showed us an image the Prowler sent to her. Apparently it was a guessing game of where Samantha was from. Prowler got her country right since her accent gave it away. Then the city.
However… The latest image sent was Prowler marked an X on a map of a familiar place. Structures and buildings are separated but clearly resemble a living residence. Samantha is shocked and tells us that’s where she lives. X marks the spot accurately of her exact location. When Samantha questioned him on guessing it correctly, Prowler played it off as a strong coincidence and was apologetic if it freaked her out knowing her exact location. While his response might seem apologetic, we couldn’t shake off that uncomfortable feeling. However we can’t do anything right now but somehow remain vigilant. A viewer knowing where a female streamer lives is technically a recipe for disaster.
“I’m sorry… this is just fucking weird…” Alicia said. Even after the aftermath, Prowler’s still trying to keep up the conversation with her. Even saying the good ol “hey you there? Are you busy?” The text grows larger like a creep prowling for her attention. It seems like an off the bat dude who’s obsessed with her. With that info in mind, we suggested blocking him, probably outright.
Before Samantha did, she did say in a response that she prefers not to get too close with her viewers and keep it in a professional setting to see her as an entertainment figure. After typing that out, she blocked and removed him, not waiting to see his response.
“Well… that was anticlimactic.” I said about saying our goodbyes to go off into our own games.
“Okay guys, good meeting.” Sebastian said. “I have to go back to Stella, she’s wondering where I wandered off to.”
“Oh Sebastian, we could’ve gotten in the server call so she can join us…” Samantha said noting we were all in the private call group.
“Yeah, to be honest it was short anyway and I did promise Stella we’d watch a movie together, but I had to dip for 20 minutes to see all the commotion here. Okay guys, bye.”
“WAIT!” Samantha called out to us before we left. She received a message request on discord. We all know it was him, but inquisitive what he said, Samantha opened the message.
Prowler1337: Do that again, and I’ll come pay you a visit.
