🕯️ CHAPTER 1 — THE FIRST SMILE

Rain hammered the streets of Madhavan City like a warning, each drop hitting the asphalt with the same rhythm as Abhinav’s heartbeat.

He wasn’t supposed to be here.

A 20-year-old rookie wasn’t allowed near an active murder scene alone.

But Abhinav never waited for permission.

He slipped under the yellow police tape, ignoring the constable shouting behind him.

The alley smelled like rust, wet concrete… and something sweet.

Too sweet.

Abhinav’s instincts snapped awake.

A body lay slumped against the brick wall — a woman, mid-thirties, eyes frozen wide.

No struggle marks.

No bruises.

Just a smile.

A large, jagged smile carved across her cheeks…

and a white card placed neatly on her lap.

Abhinav crouched. The card was plain, except for a tiny symbol drawn in red ink:

🙂

A smiling face.

But the smile was stretched… unnaturally wide.

He felt a chill run through him.

This wasn’t a signature.

It was a message.

A footstep echoed behind him.

Heavy. Slow.

Abhinav turned—

and froze.

At the mouth of the alley stood a figure wearing an unnaturally wide smiling mask.

Porcelain white.

Blank eyes.

Frozen grin from ear to ear.

The figure tilted its head.

To the left.

Then the right.

As if studying him.

Abhinav reached for his gun—

But then two more masked figures stepped out of the darkness behind the first.

Three.

Three identical smiling faces.

They didn’t move toward him.

They didn’t attack.

They just…

watched.

Three masks.

Three smiles.

Three pairs of still, empty eyes locked on the rookie detective.

Then — without a sound — all three turned perfectly in sync and walked away into the darkness.

No whispers.

No footsteps.

No rush.

Just silence.

The Silent Choir had seen him.

Not by accident.

On purpose.

Abhinav realized something in that moment — something cold, sharp, and terrifying:

The killers weren’t running from him.

They were inviting him.

And the first smile was only the beginning.
