Scene 1
SCENE 1: THE PHANTOM INTERVIEW
Zara arrives in her sedan car and exits the vehicle. She is in owe of the stunning X Holdings building she is witnessing. Towering Skyscraper that towered above most of the budlings around it. Zara steps into the cold lobby, only one person seated at the reception desk typing. She looks up and see's Zara, hands her the access key card and looks back down and continues her work. All she sees is a note saying the floor number.
TIME: Tuesday, 2:00 PM. SETTING: The penthouse conference room of "X Holdings," located in a discreet tower in Manhattan. The room is minimalist: a single, ten-foot slab of polished black granite serving as the table. The panoramic view of the city is muted by a sheer curtain of smart glass, creating an atmosphere of clinical, expensive control.
CHARACTERS:
• ANYA VANCE: (30s) Dressed in the severe, custom-tailored suit of the Chief Assistant to "X." She sits at the head of the table, facing the door. Her demeanor is polished, efficient, and utterly devoid of warmth. She is the gatekeeper, not the subject.
• ZARA WELLS: (20s) The ambitious journalist. She is bright, slightly disheveled from a long pursuit, and carries a palpable energy of self-belief. Her recording equipment is meticulously set up.
(ACT I: THE GATEWAY)
[SCENE START]
The door glides silently open. ZARA enters, guided by a security attendant who immediately disappears. ZARA places her briefcase on the marble table; the sound is sharp and intrusive in the quiet room. ANYA does not stand.
CHARACTER DIALOGUE & ACTION
ZARA (Offering a hand) Anya Vance? Thank you for meeting with me. This is... quite the space.
ANYA (Her handshake is firm, brief, and cool. Her eyes quickly catalog ZARA's attire.) Ms. Wells. My pleasure. Please, take a seat. Mr. X appreciates efficiency, so we have exactly sixty minutes. He will be communicating through me.
ZARA (Sits, clicking the record button on her small, expensive device.) Understood. It’s an unusual arrangement, but I’ve always found the methods of X to be unconventional.
ANYA (Slight smile, strictly professional) It ensures focus. Now, your questions, please.
ZARA I want to start at the beginning. The public narrative says X arrived fully formed, buying up assets overnight. But that's never true. I believe the true genius of X lies in exploiting regulatory gaps and social blind spots. Can you describe the earliest philosophy that guided this approach?
ANYA (Looks out at the muted skyline, momentarily thoughtful. She speaks as if reciting doctrine.) It is about understanding the natural order. Mr. X defines the financial world through the Shark and the Remora. The Sharks—the established titans—are too busy hunting the major prey to notice the small, non-obvious fish that attach themselves.
ZARA The Remora.
ANYA Precisely. The Remora consumes the parasites and debris the Shark misses. It gains protection and sustenance, investing in the infrastructure that supports the large movements. It is clean, symbiotic business. Not illegal. Just overlooked.
ZARA And the oversight—was that calculated? Did X deliberately cultivate the perception of being a man in order to be taken seriously by the Sharks?
ANYA (A long pause. Anya adjusts the cuff of her perfectly tailored jacket.) Mr. X created a structure devoid of personal identifiers. The media and the establishment applied their own biases to the vacuum. If those biases made the structure less scrutinized, that only highlights the efficiency of the strategy. It’s the ultimate loophole: the assumption of the beholder.
(ACT II: THE ORIGINS - LAYING THE BAIT)
CHARACTER DIALOGUE & ACTION
ZARA Let’s talk about the initial capital. The industry gossip traces the funds back to small, calculated investments in niche, local market shares. How did X know which conversations to listen to, and where did they take place?
ANYA (Leans slightly forward. Her tone remains neutral, but a ghost of something raw touches her voice.) The best insights are rarely found in boardrooms. They are found where people feel safe. Where they believe their words have no audience that matters.
ZARA You’re referring to the country clubs. Specifically, the prestigious Crestview Club, where X reportedly made his first moves. That place is a fortress of old money. How did a nobody get close enough to overhear actionable intelligence?
ANYA By not being perceived as a threat. By being a fly on the wall, fulfilling a role. When men of wealth discuss multi-million dollar deals, they don't look at the person polishing the silverware. They look through her.
ZARA (She types furiously into a notepad.) So, an employee of the club—a bartender, a waitress, a caddie—was the source?
ANYA An astute observer was the source. One who noticed how often Simon Kellington discussed the tax advantages of buying private road bonds over dinner. One who noticed which stocks the brokers were talking about while they were waiting for their tee time.
ZARA (She frowns, reviewing her notes.) My sources indicate the individual responsible for those early observations was frequently insulted by Kellington, who called this person "the tea girl." Was there a personal vendetta involved in the strategy?
ANYA (A flicker of genuine intensity enters Anya's eyes before she suppresses it.) Mr. X conducts business based on leverage, not vengeance. However, Mr. X believes there is no greater leverage than turning someone's arrogance into their greatest vulnerability.
(ACT III: THE ACCIDENTAL TRUTH)
TIME: 55 minutes into the interview. ZARA knows she has to make her move.
CHARACTER DIALOGUE & ACTION
ZARA My final question concerns the moment of commitment. The moment the small, initial investments were consolidated into the first holding company—the creation of X Holdings. It was registered at 2:17 AM on October 14th, five years ago.
ANYA (Nodding calmly) A time chosen to ensure immediate filing confirmation with overseas regulators. Efficient.
ZARA My sources also detail a curious incident from that exact night at the Crestview Club. It was pouring rain. Simon Kellington was drunk, locked out of his car, and had dropped his custom silver lighter. He demanded the assistant retrieve it from under his Mercedes, right there in the downpour.
ANYA (ANYA remains perfectly still, but her jaw tenses. She does not look at the city view. She looks only at ZARA.) That information is... highly specific.
ZARA It is. What I found curious, Anya, is that my source—a valet who witnessed the incident—said the assistant who retrieved the lighter wasn't the usual guy. It was a young woman. And he remembers, vividly, that when she finally came back up, soaking wet, she didn't wipe the mud off her face. Instead, she stared straight at Kellington, and only then, she checked the time on her watch.
ZARA (She lowers her voice, leaning over the granite table.) I checked the time stamp again, Anya. The lighter incident happened at 2:15 AM. You registered X Holdings two minutes later. So, I have to ask you: What exactly did you see on your face in the reflection of that silver lighter?
ANYA (The mask cracks. She closes her eyes for one painful second. When she opens them, the professional efficiency is gone, replaced by the deep, cold satisfaction of the victor.) I saw a clock counting down to midnight. And I saw a promise kept.
ZARA (ZARA stares, her jaw slack as she finally pieces together the truth.) You... The tea girl... You are X? I am just asking because you seem all too knowledgeable about the concept and how X came about. From my research X has kept a pretty tight low profile.
ANYA (ANYA stares down at the table, smiles slightly and keeps calm) I was a tea girl yes, but that doesn't make me X. Why do you think that X is a female? Most people think X is a male. Tell me why?
ZARA Most people think that only males dominate in your industry. But, just from research, X seems to be composed, calculative and attentive to many details. Also, the Remora concept. Most men want to be the Shark, be on top and be known. X somehow thrives and enjoys being small and not noticed. This tells me that X doesn't fall into the egotistic standard.
ANYA (sitting, laid back into the chair) That doesn't indicate that X is a female, and that it is also me.
ZARA True, I know that it's a far stretch. I thought that it is either your and X have some sort of relationship that goes beyond employee and employer. How else would you explain how you seem to know more about X?
ANYA Zara, is that all I seem like to you? It is shame you had to think like that, but I would like to confirm that X and I aren't in that type of relationship. We do have a relationship, just not that kind. Anything else?
ZARA you describe many instances you describe in detail X's dealings with so much confidence, almost like you witnessed it all. Which would be strange considering that you also say that X hired you via an online meeting, X never met you in person same on your end. So how would you speak so intimately about X?
ANYA Wow, Zara you are quite observant and I understand where you are coming from. It is just that my work life takes up most of my time that I don't have time to be seeing someone at that level, and investing my time with them.
ZARA really? I have would have never thought that about you. You seem to be a lady that can get a gentleman.
ANYA I didn't say that I can't get a gentleman, I just said that my job has been taking most of my time. I don't want to make the other person like they have to squeeze into my life. I want to focus on work and then when I am settled I will then maybe think of getting into a relationship.
ZARA interesting, X has the same way of dealing with things. In a past interview, X responded to a similar question by saying I quote, "my personal life is shadowed by my work life..." sounds a bit similar don't you think?
ANYA well similar, but not the same as my answer at all.
ZARA perhaps you are always trying to keep people at a distance so that they do not know much about you and to guard yourself from getting hurt by people. I do not know why you keep people at arm's length. But I am sure that there is a reason.
ANYA a reason?
ZARA a very logical reason. You don't strike me as a person that does things without thinking it all through. So, I am very sure that you might be X or just been working with X for a long time that you have sort of become a version of X.
ANYA a mentor?
ZARA more like impersonation, from where I am seated.
ANYA I beg to differ, I am not impersonating X, I just take inspiration from how X has managed to dominate in an industry that is known to be one that needs connections to start or survive.
ZARA you have such deep ties with X I can tell. Sorry to take you back for a moment, but tell me how you got be hired by X?
ANYA I took a huge risk and it paid out. That's how I got hired. I compared all my options and realized that the risk will benefit me more than me being scared and holding back.
[tension within the room arises as ZARA and ANYA. ZARA wants to know the truth behind X. ANYA maintains her cool as she understands that ZARA's pushing is only for her benefit of getting the headline of exposing who X is]
ZARA why won't you just tell me the truth instead of hiding behind a front.
ANYA well I guess you will have to just keep up with the investigations. This meeting is over, I have work to attend you. You can find your way out, the way you came in. Good day.
ANYA gets up and leaves the room, while ZARA stairs at the back of ANYA, furious to how ANYA became more and more vague.
[SCENE END]
