Chapter 1
A seedling pushes the earth free
Seeking out the light
It drinks in the rain
A sapling now
Spreading twisted arms
Seasons change
Time for rest
Leaves blush red, orange and yellow
One by one they let go
Making a blanket of warmth
Roots dig deep
Time for sleep
Standing bare with no shame
Reaching up as if in prayer
Short days longer now
Buds appear
Time to wake up
Warmer air is here
Pinks purples yellows and blues
Blossoms blow off in the breeze
But not before feeding the bees
Sprouts of new leaves
To dress him up in greens
Taller now
Bark is thicker
Wide canopy of leaves
Giving out shade
Hiding birds nests
Made of twigs from his brother
Cleaning the air all these years
Giving off oxygen and shade
But he is tired now
Time again to rest
Wind strong on a cold night
Brittle branches break
Taking with it the nest
Spring is here again
But no signs of waking
But wait there at the base
The ground is breaking
