Chapter 1 – The First Heist
The city never truly slept. It just shimmered — neon lights flickering against the drizzle that fell like a secret. Somewhere beyond the skyline, in a glass tower that housed priceless artifacts and secrets of its own, a shadow moved with purpose.
Selena Vale crouched against the ledge of the Roman Museum’s rooftop, the hum of security drones buzzing faintly below. Her black suit blended with the night — light, flexible, designed for silence. Beneath her mask, a small smirk curved her lips. Piece of cake, she told herself — but she knew better than to trust easy nights.
She wasn’t just stealing another artifact. This job was personal. The Aurelian Dagger — an ancient relic stolen decades ago from her father’s collection before his downfall — was locked inside a private wing owned by one of the most powerful families in the city: the Romans.
She didn’t know their full history, only whispers — the Roman empire built on shadows, corruption, and wealth buried under betrayal. She only knew one truth: they had what belonged to her family. And tonight, she was taking it back.
Through her earpiece, a voice crackled.
“You’ve got forty seconds before the next drone sweep. You’re clear, Vale.”
Selena smirked. “Then let’s make it thirty.”
She slid down the side of the glass facade, magnetic gloves guiding her descent. Below her, the museum’s lobby gleamed — all marble and gold, a fortress of culture and greed. With practiced precision, she hacked into the skylight’s thermal sensors, slipped through, and landed catlike on the polished floor.
Every move was muscle memory. Disable the infrared grid. Scramble the internal cameras. Time the patrol routes. She didn’t leave footprints — she left questions.
Inside the restricted vault, she found it — the dagger encased in crystal, gleaming under sterile light. She approached slowly, eyes softening.
“You belonged to my father,” she whispered.
But the lock wasn’t ordinary. Roman tech — biometric layers, encrypted signals, adaptive to touch. She drew a small device from her belt, a gift from her late mentor. It hummed softly as she worked. The final latch clicked open.
And then—
“Impressive,” a deep voice echoed from behind.
Selena froze. Her pulse spiked. No alarm, no warning — yet someone was there.
She turned, slow and steady. A tall man stepped from the shadows — dark suit, no weapon drawn, but power in every movement. His eyes, sharp as obsidian, met hers.
“You bypassed a system built by Roman Industries,” he said. “That shouldn’t be possible.”
Selena tilted her head. “You should update your software.”
His lips twitched — almost a smile, but not quite.
“And you should reconsider your exit strategy.”
Before he could move, the smoke bomb rolled from her hand and exploded into a silver cloud. Alarms screamed. The vault lights turned crimson. By the time he rushed forward, she was gone — a streak of shadow sprinting down the corridor, vaulting through the security gate.
Maximilian Theo Roman watched her vanish through the shattered skylight, the wind catching the edge of her cloak as she disappeared into the storm.
He stood amid the chaos — the Aurelian Dagger still missing, security feeds scrambled, guards shouting for orders. And yet, all he could think about was the glimpse he caught of her eyes through that mask.
Cold. Calculating. But something burned there — something he hadn’t seen in years.
“Find her,” he said finally, voice low but dangerous. “Whoever she is… I want everything on her.”
Outside, on the rooftops, Selena raced through the rain — the dagger secured in her pack, heart still pounding.
She had no idea that the man she’d just stolen from wasn’t just another rich collector.
He was the one whose life — and family — were tied to her own in ways neither of them could yet imagine.
