A Fateful Walk

Trees glistened with recent rain in the heart of an old park, touched by spring at its peak. Cheerful birdsong filled the air, and a gentle breeze stirred Elizabeth’s light hair, making it gleam like gold in the sunlight.

But she noticed none of it. She walked blindly, her head bowed, with her boyfriend, Dan, beside her. His hand clasped hers as he scanned their surroundings with quiet authority.

Elizabeth’s eyes had once sparkled with life, but now they were dimmed by profound sadness. She wanted to scream, to run, yet she kept moving forward, as though an invisible rope held her in place.

Instinctively, she tried to slip her hand from his cold, lifeless grip, but his fingers only tightened around hers, preventing her from pulling away.

Her thoughts drifted back to their first meeting. A mutual friend had invited her to a party, and Dan had noticed her immediately, captivated, as he later told her, by her long, flowing hair and light-blue eyes. They spent the entire evening talking and laughing, lost in each other’s company. His refined manners and striking good looks stole Elizabeth’s heart, making her believe he was the embodiment of perfection, with his charming smile, chestnut hair, and brown eyes that sparkled with energy and wit.

Their romance began with a passionate kiss. Dan never stopped showering her with praise, grand gestures, and flowers, telling her she was the most beautiful girl he had ever met. In those moments, Elizabeth’s eyes shone with happiness.

Dan came from a wealthy family, and many of her friends remarked how lucky she was to have such a handsome and promising boyfriend. At first, those comments flattered Elizabeth, but now they only irritated her. Whenever they asked about their relationship, she would force a smile and insist that everything was perfect. This façade extended to her parents as well. They were happy for her, and Elizabeth never shared much when they met, relieved that she lived in another city while pursuing her studies.

Then she remembered how everything had changed. It hadn’t happened all at once. Small cracks began to appear, slowly distorting Dan’s perfect image. At first, she thought she was imagining them, until it was too late.

Once, she shared her thoughts about a book she had recently read. She wanted to tell him how much she had enjoyed it and the profound impression it had left on her. But Dan only smirked.

“Why do you read stuff like this?”

Elizabeth’s smile vanished instantly, and she couldn’t think of a response to his dismissive remark. Yet a sharp ache in her heart told her something was wrong. If he truly loved her, he wouldn’t belittle her like that, even if they didn’t share the same tastes.

She let those small signs go unnoticed once, then twice…

Elizabeth was only twenty-one, and Dan, just two years older, somehow managed to make her feel childlike and dependent. Whenever she shared her dreams or plans, he mocked her with a chuckle, crushing her ambitions and making her believe that nothing would ever come of them.

His casual touch as he guided her through crowds, his confident orders at restaurants – what had once felt comforting now reeked of control. And the more she yearned for space of her own, the higher the wall between them grew. She was an accessory, not a partner.

Today, Elizabeth had suggested a break from their usual coffee dates, hoping the park’s familiarity might rekindle the spark their relationship lacked. Though Dan eventually agreed, he remained silent throughout the walk and responded to Elizabeth’s attempts at conversation with distracted indifference, so she soon lost hope of drawing him out. It seemed as though he was trying to punish her for not agreeing with his choice.

Doubts often gnawed at her. Had she lost her charm? Or was he simply growing tired of her? She wanted to end things but couldn’t muster the courage, wishing Dan would take that step instead. And still, part of her clung to the hope that he would change, that everything would go back to normal. Yet deep down, she recognised that their relationship was inevitably coming to an end.

Elizabeth had gone to great lengths for today’s date. The azure dress, the perfectly styled hair, and the meticulously applied makeup were all attempts to regain his attention. But he didn’t glance her way, not even once.

Now she was sure the problem lay within her. She just had to come up with something, to try harder.

“How about going over there?” she asked, pointing towards a narrow, overgrown path. It was the only way she could think of to revive their dying relationship because that was where they had shared their first kiss.

“Liz, come on, you know I hate dealing with bugs and all this mess.” Dan’s voice carried that familiar edge of irritation.

“Please, just once! I promise it’ll be fun!” Elizabeth grabbed his arm, looking at him hopefully.

He rolled his eyes and sighed but followed her anyway, as if he were doing her a favour.

As they ventured deeper along the path, surrounded by tall bushes, Elizabeth stopped and turned to him.

“Remember this place?” she asked with a nostalgic smile.

“Yeah,” he replied, looking away.

The indifference struck Elizabeth painfully.

But just as she was about to leave, feeling foolish, Dan turned his attention back to her and lifted her chin. Elizabeth’s pulse quickened, and she parted her lips in anticipation of a kiss.

Instead, Dan studied her face in silence. Then he suddenly asked, “Some girls rely too much on makeup, don’t you think?”

Elizabeth managed a confused smile.

Dan continued casually. “I saw a girl earlier… She wasn’t wearing a scrap of makeup, and she still looked amazing. I guess not everyone’s that lucky. Don’t you agree?”

Elizabeth kept smiling, not catching his implication at first, but something nagged at her. It felt like a comparison, a veiled dig at her for wearing makeup that day, trying to look even more beautiful for him.

Her boyfriend had a talent for such insults that left Elizabeth speechless while she processed the hidden sting behind his words.

She swallowed her hurt, as always, pretending it hadn’t reached her, still smiling to hide her pain. Every such silent moment felt like a betrayal of herself, yet she couldn’t break free from the cycle.

Not waiting for her answer, Dan suddenly changed the topic.

“Do you have your phone, Liz?” he asked as if nothing had happened, glancing at his dying device.

She searched her bag, but her phone was missing. Elizabeth sighed. She had left it on the sofa in her hurry to get ready for the date. “I think… I left it at home.”

Dan shook his head. “Try to remember things for once.”

“Please, can we just focus on the here and now, Dan? This walk, the spring… it won’t last long.”

“It’s not just about the phone. It’s about being responsible,” he replied, ever the instructor.

It was the last straw. Elizabeth turned sharply and walked away from him, quickening her pace. Tears blurred her vision, transforming the path lined with dense bushes and trees into a haze of green, but she fought them back, unwilling to give Dan the satisfaction of seeing her hurt.

Behind her, the steady sound of footsteps told her Dan was following, as he always did after their quarrels. Risking a glance over her shoulder, she caught a mocking smirk on his face.

It was just a game to Dan – one that left her powerless and exposed. Her tears fuelled a dark satisfaction within him, and after their quarrels, he would comfort her with gentle words and kisses. It filled her with hope that they could bridge the gap between them, and she would look into his eyes, trusting him once again.

After each reconciliation, he persuaded her to go beyond what she was comfortable with. “You wouldn’t want to upset me, would you?” he’d murmur, kissing her. “You know just how to brighten my mood,” he would add as he undressed her.

Each time, Elizabeth crossed boundaries she hadn’t truly consented to, clinging to the false hope that it might bring them closer.

In the otherwise polished park, this path was an anomaly – a corner of untamed nature amidst civilisation. Elizabeth had always wondered who had left it untouched and why. It seemed almost intentionally designed for couples seeking privacy. Too narrow for two people to walk side by side, its winding turns were disorienting to first-time visitors.

There was something about the path that filled Elizabeth with awe and... a touch of fear. She knew stories of people who had disappeared here long ago, never to be seen again. Those tales frightened her far more than Dan ever did, and despite everything between them, she had never dared to take the path without him by her side.

As her hurt subsided and her tears dried, she began to wonder whether it was wise to be here alone. She stopped, peering into the dense bushes. Sunlight broke through the canopy only in scattered shafts, casting a golden-green glow across the ground and deepening the shadows. The air here felt darker, colder. The sound of approaching footsteps raised goosebumps on her bare arms and sent a chill down her spine.

What if it’s not Dan?

Her heartbeat quickened. She stumbled, hastening her steps, her high heels sinking into the damp earth strewn with decaying leaves and twigs.

The path would lead her to a crowded part of the park. She planned to slip through unnoticed and make her way home by subway.

Once alone in her flat, she would let her tears flow freely. Dan would show up with his disarming smile as though nothing had happened. She used to forgive him, dismissing her anguish as a bad dream. Their reconciliations, charged with passion, gave her a false sense of closeness. But as the passion faded and Dan walked away satisfied, she would cry alone, feeling violated, demeaned, and empty. With each such encounter, he carried away another piece of her.

But this time, fate had different plans...
