Summary

Part One saw Etoile, a graduate student at a prestigious London University, get abducted by Emrys Magnuson, aka The Procurer, to keep as his "collectible". He submits her to brutal physical, emotional, and mental behaviour modification. But despite this at the end of Part One Etoile has managed to escape. Will she manage to keep her freedom or will the darkness surrounding Magnuson swallow her whole once again.? And what does the shady Mr Crowther want with her this time? Can her friend Aaron assist her in any way? Or will her godfather Wyndham come to the rescue? And with her particular family legacy maybe fate wasn’t something you ran from. Prologue

I. EXCERPTS FROM THE PRIVATE PAPERS OF EMRYS MAGNUSON

(undated, uncirculated)

Ownership is not about possession. People misunderstand that.

Anyone can seize something—violence is crude, lazy, unsophisticated.

True ownership requires comprehension. To own a thing, one must first understand its nature.

A collectible becomes valuable only when it is:

▪️observed with precision,

▪️chosen with intention, and

▪️broken with care.

Breaking is not destruction. Breaking is refinement. A sculptor breaks stone to reveal form. A jeweller breaks ore to reveal brilliance.

So too must a woman be broken in the right places to reveal who she was always meant to be.

Strength is essential. Fragility is essential. Defiance is essential.

The perfect collectible must resist just enough to make the moment of surrender meaningful.

I will know her when I see her.

Not beauty—beauty is common. Not youth—youth is boring. Not desperation—desperation is useless.

No.

I am waiting for a rare alchemy:

A mind bright enough to fight me. A spirit stubborn enough to challenge me. A heart soft enough to yield beautifully when the moment finally comes.

The world is full of women.

But there will be only one who fits my hand exactly.

And when she appears—

I will not hesitate.

II. CONFIDENTIAL FIELD REPORTS — M CROWTHER

Filed to the Procurer’s Network (redacted)

SUBJECT: E. MADDOX

AGE: 22

OCCUPATION: Postgraduate student, Goldsmiths

CURRENT RESIDENCE: Islington, London, England

NOTES: Unaware of surveillance.

Report 17 — 19:42 hrs

Target appears highly routine-driven. Walks the same route home most evenings. Keeps her keys in hand before turning onto her street. This suggests either training or mild anxiety. Neither is a deterrent.

Report 22 — 14:05 hrs

Observed subject studying alone in British Library café. No headphones. Listens to surrounding conversations without engaging.

Intelligent. Hyper-aware. Socially cautious. This is a promising combination.

Report 24 — 21:16 hrs

Subject stops to help an elderly man retrieve dropped groceries. No hesitation. Strong empathy reflex.

Important: Empathic subjects are the easiest to destabilize psychologically once attachment is formed.

Report 28 — 23:08 hrs

Notable detail: hair. Natural red, waist-length, appears uncultivated yet striking.

More notable: She does not seem fully aware of her own beauty.

Targets who underestimate their effect on others are more susceptible to imprinting.

Report 31 — 12:49 hrs

She laughs at something on her phone. Unselfconsciously. Head thrown back.

It is… distracting. I am maintaining professional distance. At present.

III. E MAGNUSON — UNDATED NOTE (FOUND LATER IN HIS FILES)

A photograph arrived today.

A redheaded woman crossing a street, hair wild in the wind, eyes bright, expression careless, unaware of the storm approaching.

There it was. Recognition. Certainty. Not attraction—that is too small a word. Purpose.

She is the one.

IV. REPORT 32 — M CROWTHER — 00:14 hrs

New instruction received:

“Prepare the acquisition plan. Do not engage the target. Do not reveal yourself.”

He wants her for himself. Interesting. Very interesting.

V. E MAGNUSON — LAST ENTRY BEFORE THE ABDUCTION

Tomorrow. At last.

I have waited long enough.
