The Inspiration for Star Trek?
"This is a fun, ingenious take on the road that led Gene Roddenberry to write Star Trek. A chance meeting with a famous doctor propels him into a world quite familiar to all of us, but of course totally unfamiliar to the young boy from El Paso...and the meeting of the minds that follows is rendered in humorous, yet clever writing. Though science fiction and fantasy reached an apex in Roddenberry's formative years, a show like Star Trek still seems to have emerged out of thin air. Here, it's less accidental than we might think, yet it makes for exactly the kind of time-traveling, thoughtful story Roddenberry himself used to craft for the early series. Any fan of Star Trek will warm to this story immediately, but even those with no real knowledge of the world or its characters can read this as a clever science fiction tale, where a young boy gets a visit by the Muse of the future--and thereby creates our 20/21st century mythology."
