Prologue

The field was strewn with bodies of witches and wolves. A large brown wolf staggered towards the fire, blood dripping from a wound on its back. He stopped next to the light blonde wolf’s body and let out a mournful howl. Within moments, the werewolf fell to his knees, cradling the wolf, sobbing, “Oh my Angel, what have they done?” He stroked her fur and began to bark orders to his beta. “Bring the head of the witches now!” he roared.

Beta Dreal returned with three trembling women and threw them to the ground before his Alpha. “Bring her back,” Alpha Caipus commanded.

Glancing at her sister witches frantically, the eldest spoke, “We cannot. Her body is beyond healing. She did not return to her human form even in death.” Caipus bared his teeth and growled loudly. One of the others hesitantly spoke, “We could contain her soul until a suitable replacement can be found, Alpha.” He nodded to her to continue. “You can select from our coven. If a suitable replacement isn’t found, then you can come every year at the Equinox until you find a maiden who meets your requirements.”

“What of the girl’s soul?” the Alpha asked, not that he cared what happened to a witch, but he wanted to be sure it would actually be his Angelica.

“Her soul would be sent back to the cauldron until it is reborn. Then we will fill the void with your mate’s soul,” the last witch said confidently.

The Alpha contemplated what they had told him as he looked at the broken body of his mate’s wolf. He would have her back, no matter what the cost. “I accept your offer. Just know this, if you defy me in any way, or double cross me, I will kill every last member of the coven as well as everyone they have ever loved.”

“We agree, Alpha Caipus,” the three women said, creating an unbreakable oath.
