Summary

Miriam Dane never feared the dark—until it took her. Kidnapped during an investigation gone wrong, she wakes in a windowless safehouse with only one man guarding the door: Azer Hale, the syndicate’s quietest weapon. Cold. Calculated. Impossible to read. He’s there to keep her alive. Not comfortable. Not calm. Just alive. But Miriam soon realizes something dangerous: Azer isn’t like the others. He watches her too closely. Protects her too fiercely. Touches her like he’s trying not to want her. She was stolen as leverage in a political war. Now she’s becoming the one thing her captor won’t give up. As loyalties shatter and the syndicate closes in, Miriam must choose between escaping the man she should fear… or trusting the man she can’t stop wanting. Some lines aren’t meant to be crossed. This one was meant to be destroyed.

Chapter 1 : The Room With No Windows

Miriam wakes to the sound of metal breathing.

A hum in the walls.

A vibration under her feet.

A coldness that doesn’t feel accidental.

Her wrists burn against the restraints as she tests them again—slowly this time, quietly. Whoever tied her knew what they were doing. No knots to slip. No angle to exploit.

The room is spare: concrete walls, a small table, a steel door with no handle on her side. A faint strip of light glows under it. She can smell disinfectant. And something else.

Leather.

Gun oil.

Footsteps approach.

Her pulse spikes. She forces herself to sit straighter, lift her chin, even though her throat feels tight enough to snap.

The door opens without a sound.

He enters like he’d already been in the room, like the air had shaped itself around him before he even stepped in. Broad shoulders beneath a fitted black jacket. Gloves on. No expression.

No name.

He closes the door and the sound of the lock sliding back into place is too soft for how loud it feels in her chest.

He doesn’t speak at first. He just stands there, watching.

How he looks at her unnerves her more than the restraints. Not like prey. Not like a threat. More like… a variable. A calculation.

She hates that her breath trembles. His eyes flick to her hands, catching it instantly.

“Cold?” he asks.

One word. Just one. But his voice is a low, controlled thing that feels like it belongs in a much darker room.

“No,” she lies.

He knows it’s a lie. But he moves anyway. Takes the thin blanket folded on the table. Without touching her skin, he drapes it around her shoulders with a precision that makes her more nervous than if he’d grabbed her.

He steps back. Folds his arms. Studies her like a puzzle.

“Why am I here?” she asks.

“Wrong place,” he says.

“Then let me leave.”

His head tilts, the slightest angle. “Not an option.”

Her stomach twists. “Is this about my investigation?”

His eyes sharpen—barely. A flicker. The first crack in his mask.

He doesn’t answer.

So she tries again. “Are you going to hurt me?”

“No.”

The certainty in his tone disorients her. Like the idea itself bothers him.

But she’s not settling for that.

“Then what are you going to do?”

Another pause. Measured. Heavy.

“Keep you breathing.”

It’s not reassuring.

He moves to the small table and sets down something she didn’t know he was carrying. A bottle of water. And then another item: a small silver device.

He turns it on.

A soft, rhythmic beeping starts. Slow, steady. Almost like…

A pulse monitor.

She stiffens. “You’re tracking my heartbeat?”

“Protocol.”

“For what?”

He meets her eyes for the first time — directly, deeply.

Her breath catches.

“So I know,” he says quietly, “when you’re scared.”

A chill races down her spine.

“Why would you need to know that?”

He doesn’t answer. He doesn’t have to. His eyes shift downward—a brief glance at her bound hands—before returning to her face.

It hits her then:

He’s not checking if she’s afraid to intimidate her.

He’s checking so he can control it.

He sits again, the chair screeching lightly across the floor. Closer this time. Close enough that she can see the faint scar cutting through the stubble of his jaw. Close enough that she can smell something unexpectedly clean on him—like cedar smoke and rain.

Miriam forces herself to look brave.

“You could just ask,” she says.

“I can’t ask things I don’t need to know,” he replies.

That lands strangely.

“Then what do you need to know?”

His gaze drags over her face, slow, deliberate. Not sexual. Not soft.

Assessing. Cataloging.

Like she’s a map he’s memorizing in case he needs to destroy it.

“Everything that affects your survival,” he says.

The door suddenly buzzes—short, sharp, mechanical.

His posture changes instantly. He stands with fluid speed, every line of his body turning alert and lethal.

Without looking at her, he says:

“Do not make a sound.”

He presses a finger to a small device in his ear.

A voice crackles on the other end.

He listens. Eyes narrowing. Muscles tightening beneath his jacket.

Then—softly, dangerously—he says:

“She’s not to be touched.”

Miriam’s heart thunders.

He glances at her once—only once—before the door unlocks again.

He steps outside, pulling it shut behind him.

She’s alone again.

But this time, she isn’t relieved.

Because now she knows something she didn’t before—

He wasn’t just assigned to guard her.

He’s fighting to keep her.

Silence stretches thin after he leaves—so thin it buzzes in Miriam’s ears. She tries to listen for voices outside the door, footsteps, hints of how many people are there… but the walls are too thick. Sound dies inside them.

She shifts in the chair again, testing the restraints more gently this time.

No give.

Not even a millimeter.

Her heartbeat spikes—fast enough that the pulse monitor on the table picks up the rhythm. The beeping accelerates. The room suddenly feels smaller. More airless.

Then—

A click.

The door opens again.

He walks back in.

Different.

Tense.

A shadow in motion.

He closes the door with the same softness as before, but the air changes around him—charged, electric, like the temperature drops a fraction. His jaw is locked, and for the first time since she woke, he looks genuinely angry.

Not at her.

At something—or someone—outside this room.

She swallows. “What happened?”

He doesn’t answer.

He moves behind her instead.

Her breath stutters.

She feels the heat of his body at her back. Not touching her, but close enough that a phantom warmth spreads down her spine.

Then she hears the smallest sound—

a knife sliding from a sheath.

Her chest tightens.

But the blade doesn’t touch her.

He cuts the restraints at her wrists with swift, precise slices. The ropes fall away instantly. Like he’d been waiting for an excuse to free her.

She rubs her wrists, skin raw. “Why are you doing this?”

His breath is steady. Controlled.

But his voice isn’t.

“They requested access to you.”

Requested.

Access.

Her stomach flips.

“And you didn’t let them?” she whispers.

“No.”

A single word, dark and firm.

Almost a promise.

She looks up at him, searching his face. His eyes are storm-dark, sharp, furious. But beneath the anger is something else she can’t name yet. Something frighteningly close to possession.

“You’re not safe restrained,” he says quietly.

The implication hits her like a blow.

Not safe from them.

But safe from what they wanted to do.

Before she can ask anything else, he kneels beside her—unexpected, controlled, almost reverent. His gloved fingers wrap a thin band around her wrist. Not metal. Something softer. Almost like a medical strap.

“What is that?” she asks.

“Insurance.”

“To keep me here?”

“To keep you alive.”

He stands. And in the strange, heavy silence that follows, Miriam realizes she has more freedom now…

but absolutely no idea what that freedom means.

She flexes her hands.

She could push him.

She could run.

She could fight.

But something in his posture stops her.

Not fear.

Something stranger.

He’s watching her like he’s waiting to see what she will do.

Not like a captor.

Like a man who has just taken a side.

Before she can speak, the lights slam off.

Total darkness.

A mechanical alarm blares once—sharp, metallic, slicing through the room.

Not from inside.

From the hallway.

He moves instantly—one hand gripping her arm, steady and strong, pulling her behind him as if she’s something he’s already claimed.

“What’s happening?” she whispers.

Footsteps thunder outside.

Multiple. Fast.

He turns his head slightly toward her, voice low, lethal:

“Chapter One ends here.”

He draws his gun.

“They found you.”
