The Subterranean City and Valerius's Rejection
The Heirs' Haven
Aiden, wearing the Moon Ring, safely transported both himself and Kaelin to the Heirs' secret haven, the subterranean city of 'Luna Sanctum' (Moon Sanctuary).
Luna Sanctum was a surprisingly advanced city of caves and tunnels, hidden many meters beneath the town's surface. Crystal veins illuminated the living spaces within the city with a soft, silvery light. Everything was silent, orderly, and permeated with the scent of a centuries-old hierarchy.
The central meeting hall of the city was a naturally formed, colossal, domed cavern. Aiden brought Kaelin here, to the council where the clan's eldest members and their leader, Valerius, were gathered.
Valerius was Aiden's great-uncle; a grim, strong-jawed, elderly Heir whose eyes shone with a silver color that was darker and harder than Aiden's. A century of tradition could be felt in Valerius’s every posture. Aiden stood in the center of the council with Kaelin by his side. The Moon Ring on his right hand glowed.
"I stand before the Council," Aiden began, his voice echoing in the cavern. "I have returned the Moon Ring. And beside me is my ally who helped me find it. This is Kaelin."
Valerius frowned. His gaze raked over Kaelin from head to toe, as if searching for the smallest flaw. Kaelin was still dressed in muddy and torn clothes, a contrast to the luxury and formality of the setting.
"We are grateful to you for bringing the Ring, Heir Aiden," Valerius said, his voice icy. "However," his gaze turned to Kaelin, "Why have you brought a Mortal here? Our laws strictly forbid humans from setting foot in this sacred place."
Aiden stepped forward. "She is not just a human, Valerius. She is an ally. She used the Ring to shield us from Seraphina's attack. The Ring formed a bright shield in Kaelin's hand."
Astonished whispers rose from all corners of the hall.
Valerius's face hardened with anger. "That is a tale! The Ring responds to the power of our blood. If it glowed in a Mortal’s hand, it was merely a coincidence, or a trick."
"It was no trick," Kaelin interjected, with unexpected resolve. "Seraphina attacked me with her silver claws, and the Ring protected me. If it had been a coincidence, I wouldn't be here now."
Valerius leaned towards Kaelin. "Your human memory may be short, young girl. But our memory spans millennia. Humans betrayed us, hunted us, and labeled us 'cursed.' The Ancient Law commands us to stay away from Mortals to preserve our existence. And you, Aiden," Valerius turned to his nephew, "Your act of bringing this girl here is not just a crime, but a betrayal against the future of the clan!"
The Judgement
Valerius struck his gavel against the stone. "Aiden, you are acknowledged for bringing the Ring. But for defying our Laws..."
Valerius's silver eyes blazed with fury. "Heir Aiden, you are hereby exiled from the clan and Luna Sanctum indefinitely! And the Mortal Kaelin... she will be immediately returned to the surface!"
Aiden quickly protested: "No! You cannot send her back! Seraphina is out there and she knows the Ring was involved. Kaelin has become her target!"
Valerius smiled with cold certainty. "That is your concern, Aiden. Kaelin does not deserve the protection of this sanctuary. Take her, lead her to the surface, and do not return. Our Laws will not be broken."
Aiden knew Valerius's decision was final. He was filled with anger and frustration. He turned to Kaelin, taking her hand.
"We are leaving, Kaelin," he said, his voice trembling.
For the first time, Kaelin saw the power of the entrenched hierarchy and prejudice so clearly. The subterranean city felt more like a prison than a sanctuary. But this rejection only strengthened the bond between them.
Together, they walked through the silver-lit halls of Luna Sanctum, heading towards the surface from which they were exiled. Now, Aiden had no haven, and Kaelin had no protection. Only the forest, and each other, remained.
