Chapter 1
The night was windy and chilly, rain showers splattering outside adding to the chilliness.it was around midnight the whole neighborhood was asleep quiet and peaceful. A sharp crack resounded from the fireplace as a glowing splinter broke free, carried by a gust of wind, landing silently on the edge of the rug. within moments, flames feed hungrily into the fabric, devouring anything that comes its way and with its insatiable hunger, it rages wildly consuming everything in the sitting area.
upstairs a woman is lying peacefully in her bed unaware of the silent predator creeping under her door. suddenly she feels this immense heat and breathing feels difficulty and she wakes up to her waste nightmare. The house is on fire!!!she rushes over to the door; the moment she touches the handle her hand recoils due to the burning sensation warning her of the inferno raging beyond. Screams emanate from outside as the neighborhood finally wakes up and faces the horror before them.
downstairs little Phillip went to use the bathroom earlier before the fire was fully ablaze but what could a sleepy 6-year-old really notice to be able to warn everyone. Moments later all his sleepiness is washed away when thick smoke fills the bathroom and suddenly, he is having difficulties in breathing, and the heat isn't making it any better.
"Mom!!? mom are you there? I'm scared"
i try to open the door but it seems like there are things blocking it from outside and it's also getting hotter in here and the roof is starting to fall off. I jump inside the tub the only place i feel like it's safe right now. I turn on the cold water, hoping it will make this burning room cooler.Everything is like a blur and just when I thought I was going to burn alive I remember is seeing Mathew's mom breaking through the bathroom window with only a cloth on he face to protect her from the fire, calling out my name. I used the last strength in my to call out to her and then I blacked out.
I remember waking up the next morning with aunt roxanne sleeping in the hospital chair all dishevelled probably from the previous night. I guess she was on the edge because the slightest movement I made woke her up. There was a relieved look on her face but I could see there was sopain in her eyes that she tried to hide behind her beautiful smile. A few moments later I did find out the reason for her sadness. My mother, her best friend had perished in the fire. The way she tried to stay strong for me through out the whole funeral meant a lot to me.
We stayed over for a month after the fire but my dad said he couldn't keep on living in the same area where his wife died. I have to admit, aunt roxanne was there making sure she fulfilled all the roles of a mother and those few days really changed me. I saw her in a different light or maybe darkness.
