Meet the GLONA'S and ASAN'S
My name is Glona Glory, and I was born into the busiest bakery in the town of Hesusa
People say they can smell our ovens before they even cross the bridge into town. Most mornings, the shop is already full before the sun comes up, and most nights, flour still floats in the air like dust from a dream we haven’t finished.
My father, Glona Gabriel, is known for one thing more than anything else: Z Bread.
Everyone loves it. People argue over the last loaf. The mayor once tried to buy ten at once, and my mother, Selena, told him he had to follow the same rules as everyone else.
But inside our house, Z Bread is a different story.
It is the recipe that built our name.
It is also the recipe that broke a friendship.
My father rarely talks about the past, but even as a child, I heard things. I heard that his former friend, Asan Patrick, once worked beside him. I heard they used to dream of opening a bakery together. And I heard that one night, something happened with a recipe — something neither man has ever forgiven.
Across the street stands Patrick & Sons Bakery, run by Asan Patrick himself.
Whenever our windows are open at the same time, the smell of our bread mixes with theirs, and the entire street becomes a reminder that the two bakeries cannot escape each other.
I grew up learning the rules of the rivalry.
Don’t enter the Patrick bakery.
Don’t talk to the Patrick children.
And never, ever mention the recipe notebook.
I followed the rules until the day I met Asan Vinson, Patrick’s son.
