Chapter 1: An Unforgettable Day
The soft morning sunlight slipped through the open window, falling gently on Emily’s face. She blinked a few times and slowly opened her eyes. The warm light made her room glow in shades of gold. With a sleepy smile, she stretched her arms and stood up, pulling the curtain aside. The sunlight touched her skin, and for a moment, everything felt calm and peaceful. It was a new day – and Emily was ready to begin it.
She reached for her phone on the nightstand and noticed a new email. Her heart skipped a beat. With a mix of curiosity and nervousness, she opened it, her eyes widening as she read the words.
“Congratulations! You’ve been admitted to the London School of International Relations.”
She couldn’t believe her eyes. Blinking rapidly, she rubbed them again and again, afraid that the words were just a dream. But the message stayed there, staring back at her. A squeal of pure happiness escaped her lips. It was her dream college – the one she had worked for years to get into, even in secret. Slowly, a genuine, bright, unguarded smile spread across her face. “I have to tell them” She whispered softly.
Her parents. Her brother, Ethan.
Her parents had always kept her hidden. In their world, danger was everywhere, and enemies didn’t care about family when they wanted to hurt someone. Only her parents and her brother, Ethan, knew she existed. Besides them, only her personal assistant, Leo, and her bodyguard, Cole, knew. She stayed in a farmhouse far at the edge of town, safe but alone. Still, her parents made sure their bond stayed strong – they visited her every weekend, bringing laughter and love, making her feel like she belonged.
But today, an unfamiliar ache tugged at her heart. She felt like the happiest person alive – she had just been admitted to her dream college – but there was no one to share it with. A pang of longing hit her as she thought of her parents and Ethan. She remembered her secret wish, buried deep inside: to live like a normal girl, to feel the simple joy of sharing her happiness instantly with the people she loved. What if she could be just Emily, not a hidden heiress protected from the shadows? Despite the swirl of emotions – excitement, longing, and a touch of fear – she made a choice. Today, she wouldn’t wait for the weekend. Today, she would visit her parents for the first time ever.
Emily got ready quickly, choosing clothes that were simple yet practical. She wore a basic black tee, paired with faded blue jeans and a leather jacket. Her hair was loose, falling freely to frame her face beautifully. To hide her inherited eye colour, she slipped in her signature blue contact lenses. Slinging her bag over her shoulder, she wrapped a scarf around her face, shielding herself from the world outside.
The world didn’t know her true identity – her life, her family, or the danger she carried in her name. But today, none of that mattered. Today, she just wanted to see her parents’ smiles, to feel the warmth of being with the people she loved. The hidden girl could stay hidden later; for now, she was Emily, longing for a moment of normal, unguarded happiness.
Emily descended the wooden staircase, her steps quiet but firm. The faint hum of morning filled the air as she reached the garage, where Leo and Cole stood waiting. Leo, her personal assistant, leaned casually against the sleek black SUV, while Cole, her bodyguard, stood in his usual stiff position—alert, eyes scanning every corner for danger.
As Emily walked toward them, Leo straightened immediately, giving a small respectful bow. She offered a soft smile, hidden behind her scarf.
“Are you sure this is a good idea?” Leo asked gently, his tone lined with concern.
Emily met his eyes, calm but determined. “They deserve to know,” she said softly. That was all.
Leo and Cole exchanged a quick glance before nodding. Cole opened the car door for her, and they all got in. The engine came alive with a low growl, and soon the SUV was moving steadily down the road, cutting through the quiet countryside.
.
.
An hour later, the car slowed to a stop outside the main mansion. Emily’s smile faded almost instantly. The front gates were wide open. Her stomach tightened. Something felt wrong…. very wrong.
Cole lifted his hand in the air, signaling danger. His face changed instantly, turning serious. He told them to stay back and stepped out first. His eyes scanned everything with slow, careful movements. Every familiar face lay on the floor, covered in blood. His hand immediately went to his gun.
Emily’s heart dropped. She couldn’t understand what was happening. She tried getting out of the car but Leo stopped her. She didn’t listen. Her mind was spinning, only one thought echoing inside her — her family.
“No,” she whispered. Her voice was filled with fear.
She got down and quietly followed Cole with her gun in hand. She was trained well enough to handle it. Being a mafia heiress meant she was supposed to be strong, but right now even breathing hurt. Every step felt heavier, like she was walking toward the end of everything she ever loved.
They scanned the entrance and moved inside.
And then they stopped.
Blood.
Bodies.
Complete silence.
Emily’s knees almost gave up, but she forced herself to keep going. Her voice cracked as she called out, “Mom? Dad? Ethan?” There was no reply. No sound. Nothing.
She tried to run deeper into the mansion, but a hand wrapped around her wrist. She looked up with tears in her eyes and saw Leo.
“Don’t,” he said. His voice shook even though he was trying to be strong. He couldn’t let her go inside without checking it first.
Her breathing hitched, but she didn’t pull away. She just stared at his hand holding her wrist, waiting for him to let go. He didn’t. His grip stayed firm.
Something inside her snapped.
Her shoulders straightened. Her jaw tightened. The softness in her eyes disappeared completely. A cold, empty stillness replaced it.
“Leo,” she whispered. Her voice trembled only for a second before turning sharp.
“Leave. My. Wrist.”
Each word was clear. Cold. Final.
Leo instantly loosened his grip. He wasn’t shocked by her words… he was shocked by her. This wasn’t the sweet, innocent girl he always saw. This was someone else. Someone fierce. Someone dangerous. Mr. John Black’s daughter.
She stepped back, her eyes red, her voice low. “If you try to stop me again,” she said, “you won’t like what happens next.”
Before he could say anything, she ran. She pushed open door after door until she reached the living room.
And then she froze.
Her mother’s hand was hanging off the couch. Her father lay beside her on the floor. Both of them still. Both of them gone.
Her world stopped. Her breath stopped. Everything inside her shattered.
A strangled sob escaped her lips as she dropped to her knees. “No…”
Then a faint sound.
She turned sharply. Across the room, against the wall, was Ethan—barely breathing, blood soaking his shirt. She rushed to him, cradling his head in her lap. “Ethan! Stay with me!”
He coughed, wincing. “Em… Emily… you shouldn’t be here…”
“I got into my dream college,” she whispered, tears running down her face. “I came to surprise you all. Ethan, who did this?”
He coughed again, weaker this time. “Betrayal… inside… someone we trusted. They wanted the throne… you have to finish this…”
“No” Emily whispered. “No, don’t say that— LEO CALL THE AMBULANCE!!!”
“Shh Em-Emily listen to me carefully. There’s a safe behind Dad’s bookshelf. His files… the keys, codes… it’s all there.” His voice was fading. “You… have to become what he never wanted you to be.”
He gripped her hand faintly.
“But… do one thing for me… for him.” His voice trembled. “Finish your graduation. Dad wanted you to have a normal life. That dream… don’t let it die too.”
Emily’s tears fell onto his face as she nodded. “I promise.” He looked into her eyes one last time.
“Take revenge… and live.”
Then his eyes lost focus. The last breath left his lungs. Emily sat frozen. The tears stopped. The shock, the pain – they all turned into something else.
Silence.
She slowly stood.
Her legs felt weak, but she forced herself up. Her eyes moved around the living room again – her parents… her brother… lying there, lifeless. Tears kept falling until they just stopped. Her face felt numb. Her heart felt empty.
Leo entered behind her, quietly. His steps were hesitant, scared, “Emily…” he whispered.
She didn’t turn around. She didn’t even blink. The pain inside her had already started turning into something else — something darker. She straightened her back, her voice cold and steady.
“Call the council,” she said. “Every mafia leader in England. I repeat… every single one. I want a meeting.”
Leo froze. His voice shook when he spoke, “W-what are you going to tell them?”
She finally turned around. She walked toward him slowly, each step heavy with rage. When she reached him, she looked straight into his eyes.
“I’ll show them who I am,” she said.
A humourless laugh slipped out of her. The kind that didn’t match the girl she used to be. The kind that made Leo’s blood run cold.
“Funny, isn’t it?” she said softly. “Right now, the whole underworld must be celebrating. They must be thinking the throne is empty. They must be thinking the Black legacy ended today.”
Her voice dropped, turning even sharper, “Poor them. They never knew I existed… the daughter kept in the shadows, hidden from monsters like them. But the shadows raised me. The shadows are all I have left now.”
She looked back at her family – her once happy family, now covered in blood. Her jaw clenched.
“Today… they took everything from me,” she whispered. “Tomorrow? I take everything from them.”
She stepped closer to the bodies, her eyes burning with a new kind of fire, “Let them celebrate while they can. Because when the sun rises… it rises with me.”
Her voice was steady, dangerous, certain.
“The rise of Emily Black. The daughter they never saw coming.” Her breath shook, but her words didn’t. “Their empires will crumble. Their bloodlines will rot. Their throne will collapse under the weight of my revenge.”
She lifted her chin, her eyes cold and fierce.
“I’m coming for every last one of them.”
