Prologue

This book is on Wattpad as well under the name Lexi Black. This is not plagarism, I am the author.

I’ve been running for what feels like days. My muscles burn like fire and I realize I need to stop.

I can’t afford to hurt myself. I brace my hands on my knees. After a minute I begin pacing slowly so my muscles won’t go stiff. Looking up at the star filled sky I feel like screaming.

Falling to my knees I put my head in my hands and try to calm down as the events of today wash over my mind. The night is quiet. I allow the quiet to invade my mind so that the noise in my head bleeds away into a numb silence. Tucking into the crook of a tree I lean my head back and close my eyes. Right before I drift to sleep I hear a noise in the quiet. Normally I would’ve ignored it but recent events cause me to jump up and look around.

A old woman comes into my view. My hand rests on my dagger in the sheath on my belt. I take a step back as she gets closer. With a scratchy voice I hear her

“Hello young one! Are you in need of assistance? My house is just down this way. Please allow me me to help you. For the night is cold and the beasts are hungry.”

I take a slow step closer and view her up close. She is draped in old cloth covered in dirt. She smiles and I relax. She is to frail to be much of a threat. She waves me over to follow her. And for some reason, I do.

The route we take is hard to navigate. Just as I start getting weary I see a small fire and a small hut. I guess this is what she meant by her home. She takes my hand and I force myself not to pull away. I’m not used to being touched. Especially not a kind touch. She motions for me to sit by the fire and runs into her hut and brings out a bowl of broth. I take a sip of the bland warm liquid. A hum escapes my lips since its been a few days since I’ve eaten.

I clear my throat “I’m sorry but I can’t pay you for any of this. I have nothing.” The old lady sighs and places a hand on mine. “My dear I ask for nothing material. I want something much more valuable. My dear, I want to know your story.” I inhale sharply. Panic taking over for a moment. I stutter out a reply “I-I’m just a average girl. Nothing worth telling has happened to me.” She smiles and I see a glint in her eyes. “My child I know you’re lying. Your shoulders sag with the story you have. Please tell me.”

I sigh and shift on the ground. I mean, what harm could it do? She’s just a frail old lady. And it would be nice to tell someone what I’ve been through. I straitened up and clear my throat again. “Ok, well I guess I’ll start from the beginning.” Her smile widens and she gazes into my eyes. Ready to take in my every word.
