Once There was a boy who earned his living by catching fish. That was how he and his ailing father survived. The boy was handsome, with a well-built frame. His eyes were a light shade of blue, and his hair shone like golden silk.

He was skilled in sword fighting and horse riding. His name was Jack Robinson, and his father’s name was Wellberg.

Jack lived on a small island called Sudout Island, one of the many scattered across the sea. He had just won the island’s annual boat race — for the fifth time in a row.

His best friend, Henry, congratulated him warmly. But there was also Bobby, a local bully who made it his daily mission to bother Jack. Yet Jack was a cheerful soul; he never paid much attention to him.

After the race, Jack returned to his old, broken hut. The roof was made of worn-out wood and hay, with small holes that looked like stars in the night sky. From inside came the sound of heavy coughing.

Wellberg: “Jack! Where have you been?”

Jack: “I just won the boat race, Father! Look — I brought your medicine and some food. Please eat and get well soon.”

Wellberg: “Don’t worry about me, son. My time is nearly over.”

Jack: “Don’t say that, Father! You’ll be fine soon. Then I’ll take you out sailing with me again. But for now, please eat this.”

He handed his father the food and medicine, then left for his friend Billy’s house. Every evening, Jack went there to practice horse riding with him. But Billy never paid much attention to training; he just liked to talk and wander around.

Billy’s father, a wealthy landlord, despised Jack. He insulted him often, calling him worthless. But Jack endured it — only for Billy’s sake.

Days passed like that, until one morning, Wellberg stopped Jack at the door.

Wellberg: “Son… I feel strange today. Stay home, don’t go anywhere.”

Jack: “But Father, if I don’t go to work, how will I buy your medicine?”

Wellberg: “To hell with my medicine!” he shouted, coughing violently.

Jack quickly gave him some water.

Wellberg: “I’m tired, Jack. Tired of carrying this deceitful body. Listen… I have a burden on my heart. I want to set it free before I die.”

Jack (worried): “Father, please don’t talk like that.”

Wellberg: “No, Jack. Listen to me. I don’t have much time left. I… I’m not your real father.”

Jack (shocked): “What? What are you saying?”

Wellberg: “It’s the truth, son.”

Jack froze, unable to move. His heart pounded in disbelief.

As his father coughed harder, Jack rushed to his side and held his head in his lap.

Wellberg: “Jack… you are the son of my master. I was only his servant. I committed a terrible sin — I ruined your life.”

His breathing grew heavier. Jack’s eyes filled with tears as he stared at the man he had always called Father.

Would Jack ever learn the truth of who he really was?

What secret did his dying father still wish to tell him?
