Chapter 1: Public Rejection
The full moon hung low over the Blackwood Packs clearing, casting silver light across the gathered wolves. Torches burned along the edges of the ancient circle, flames dancing against thick pines that stood like guardians around the territory. Hundreds of pack members pressed close together. Elders stood in front, pups peered from behind parents legs, and warriors lined the raised stone platform where fates were decided and bonds were forged. Elena Thompson waited at the crowds edge, heart slamming against her ribs. She was twenty one, had only completed her first shift last year, and tonight everything was supposed to change. The Moon Goddess had chosen for her. She felt it two weeks ago when her eyes met Lucas Blackwood's across the training field. That spark snapped through her like lightning, her wolf surging forward with a single word. Mate. He was her mate. The future Alpha, tall and powerful, with storm grey eyes that turned her legs to water. Whispers had circled all day. Lucas would announce his choice tonight. An alliance. Everyone spoke of the Silver fang Pack to the north, borders too close, their Alpha always hungry for more ground. A marriage would stop the border fights and make both packs stronger. Elena shoved the fear aside. Lucas felt the bond too. She saw it in the way he watched her on patrol, the brush of his fingers that lasted longer than it should. He would not turn away from the Goddess gift. Not for politics. Silence fell as Lucas stepped onto the platform. He moved with quiet command, dark hair pulled back, the black ink of the pack crest curling over his collarbone. His father stood beside him, the current Alpha, face carved from years of hard choices. Across the platform waited the Silver fang delegation. At their centre was Isabella Voss, daughter of their Alpha. Blond hair fell sleek down her back, features sharp and confident, red dress clinging to every curve. She looked at Lucas like he already belonged to her. Elena's wolf paced inside her chest, restless and certain. She lifted her chin and met Lucas gaze when he scanned the crowd. For a moment his eyes locked on hers, and she felt the bond flare hot and bright. He knew. He had to know. The elder Alpha raised his hand for silence that was already complete. “Tonight we strengthen the Blackwood Pack,” he began, voice carrying easily over the clearing. “Border skirmishes have cost us blood. The Silver fangs face the same threat from rogues and human encroachment. United, we stand unbreakable. ”Murmurs of agreement rippled through the crowd. Elena barely heard them. Her focus stayed on Lucas. The elder continued. “My son, your future Alpha, has made his decision for the good of us all. ”Lucas stepped forward. The torchlight painted shadows across his face, making his expression impossible to read. Elena held her breath. “I accept the alliance,” Lucas said, voice steady and deep. “I choose Isabella Voss as my mate and Luna. ”The words struck Elena like a physical blow. For a second the world narrowed to nothing but ringing in her ears. Isabella smiled, triumphant, and stepped closer to Lucas. He took her hand without hesitation. No. This could not be real. Elena's wolf howled inside her, a raw sound of betrayal that clawed at her throat. She waited for Lucas to look at her again, to show some sign this was a mistake, a cruel test. But he kept his gaze forward, jaw set, as his father began the formal words of acceptance. The bond twisted inside her chest, sharp and burning. Every instinct screamed at her to run to the platform, to demand he acknowledge what the Goddess had given them. Instead she stood frozen, nails biting into her palms. Around her the pack erupted in cheers. Some sounded relieved, others genuinely pleased. A few glanced her way with pity or confusion, but most eyes stayed on the new couple. Isabella leaned into Lucas side, her hand resting possessively on his arm. Elena's vision blurred. She tasted blood where she had bitten her lip. The cheers felt miles away, muffled by the roar in her head. Then Lucas finally looked down into the crowd. His eyes found hers across the firelight. For one heartbeat something flickered there, regret, pain, maybe even apology. Then it was gone, shuttered behind cold resolve. He turned away. The rejection slammed into her like a wave, stealing her breath. Her wolf whimpered, curling in on itself. The bond did not break, not yet, but it stretched thin and aching, a live wire pulled too tight. Elena could not stay. She pushed through the celebrating crowd, ignoring the hands that reached to congratulate her on nothing, the voices that called her name. She kept moving until the trees closed around her and the clearing lights faded behind. Only then did she let the tears come, hot and silent, as she ran into the dark forest that had always been her home. And now felt like a cage.

A very long paragraph ...but good. 👍
