One Cold Night.

The first time Maddie Wilkes ever saw a wolf was when she was 12 years old.

It had been a dark night glazed with frost and white snow. Winter's icy chill outlined the air. The blackness of the forest was dimly illuminated by the moon's light.

Maddie's face was flushed with a cool blue. Her cardigan was wrapped tightly around her, to preserve what little body warmth she had left. Her skirt and boots were caked with snow.

Maddie had been playing with her cousins earlier until she had gotten lost in the forest. Her cousins had ditched her. It was no secret her family were not too fond of her

Maddie noticed a shadow hiding in the bush. It was a large, poised creature. Like a wolf.

The shadow padded into view. It was a dark brown-furred wolf with deep gold eyes. Normally, Maddie would have noted that he was a very handsome creature but she was too cold to have any sort of response.

The wolf padded it's way over to Maddie. It nudged her with it's nose then jerked its head forward.

"You want me to follow you?" Maddie asked the creature.

The wolf nodded. It started walked ahead, Maddie following close behind.

The two walked on until Maddie was able to see her aunt's house through all the smog.

Maddie faced the wolf and knelt in front of it. "Thank you, I won't forget this." she stated, lightly petting the wolf's head. She stood up and walked back to her aunt's house.

The wolf did not make a move until it knew that Maddie had gotten inside safely. It then turned and darted into the forest.
