Chapter 1 - Dawn of a New Era

The first light of Luminara’s morning hit the crystal towers like liquid gold. From the balcony of the Shield Academy, I watched the trainees move across the training grounds below. Their movements were awkward, unpolished, but full of potential. Some stumbled, some overextended, some misjudged their energy pulses—but every one of them carried the pulse of the Shield, alive and responsive, like a heartbeat in the city itself.

Evergreen stood beside me, hands gripping the railing. She was calm on the surface, but I could feel her energy thrumming through the air, golden and deliberate. Even from here, I could sense the subtle nudges she gave the trainees, guiding their shields without their noticing. Always protective… always worried, I thought. That was Evergreen—she carried the weight of Luminara on her shoulders, and I could feel the strain in her pulse.

“They’re messy,” I muttered, more to myself than to her. But she heard me.

“They’re promising,” she replied, voice steady, but I could see the tension in her shoulders. “Shields aren’t born perfected, Silas. They have to learn control… judgment… responsibility.”

I nodded, scanning the grounds below. One trainee’s barrier wavered violently, nearly knocking over another student. I could see Evergreen’s hands flicker faintly with energy as she corrected the pulse, smoothing it, stabilizing it. It was beautiful… but also dangerous. She was giving them help, yes, but she couldn’t do it for them forever.

“You can’t overdo it,” I said softly. “They need to learn their own strength, not rely on yours.”

She retracted her energy slowly, eyes narrowing as she studied the student’s form. “I know,” she said. “But sometimes, one nudge is all it takes to keep them from hurting themselves—or others.”

I glanced at her profile, golden light reflecting off her hair. She’s come so far. The first time I met her, she was terrified of her own energy, afraid to even touch the Codex fragment. Now… she controlled it like an extension of herself, like it was part of her. And yet, I thought, the weight is still there. Heavy.

A faint pulse caught my attention—a subtle disturbance at the edge of the city, almost imperceptible. My heart skipped. Scouts would have reported anything, but this… this was different. Someone’s hiding it.

“Evergreen,” I said, my voice low. “Scouts picked up a faint energy signature near the western outskirts. It’s… subtle, but deliberate. They’re hiding it.”

Her eyes widened slightly, and I could feel the Shield inside her shift, alert, aware. “Council activity?” she asked.

“Likely,” I admitted. “And it’s not just a patrol. Whoever is out there knows we’re stronger now. They’re testing us—probing the city. And judging by the masking… it’s not just scouts. Someone’s clever.”

Her jaw tightened, her hands clenching the balcony railing. I knew her pulse was reacting to mine, amplifying, alert, scanning. The Shield always responded to her first, but I had learned to feel it too, like a second heartbeat in the air.

“You’re ready for this, right?” I asked cautiously, almost afraid of the answer. Not because I doubted her abilities—but because I knew how much it would weigh on her. On us.

She straightened, golden light pulsing faintly around her fingertips. “I have to be. Luminara depends on it.”

I could feel the determination radiating from her, strong and steady. I swallowed, letting my own energy calm and ground me. Together, we were stronger than any scout, any Council operative, any hidden enemy. But preparation was everything. Vigilance was everything.

From my perspective, I could see the trainees below struggling to lift shields, stabilize barriers, and coordinate movement. I noted who needed guidance, who had potential, and who might panic under real pressure. My mind worked like a battlefield map, anticipating problems, planning contingencies, and watching Evergreen manage it all with quiet, brilliant precision.

“The city won’t wait for us,” I said quietly, almost to myself. “The Council won’t sit idle, and neither can we. Every step, every choice, every pulse matters.”

She turned to me, eyes bright with determination. “Then we make sure we’re ready. Together.”

I nodded, gripping my staff tightly. “Together,” I repeated, letting my own energy flare faintly, harmonizing with hers. The Shield pulsed in response, alive and aware, a promise that we were prepared for whatever the day—or the Council—would throw at us.

And with that, we descended to the training grounds, ready to face the challenges of a new era.
