Chapter 1

Player Two Has Joined

The game updated itself at 3:06 a.m.

No download bar. No patch notes. Just a soft ding and a new option on the menu:

CONTINUE — Player 2 Online

Jay frowned. He lived alone. The game was single-player.

Still half-asleep, he clicked CONTINUE.

His character spawned in the usual town—empty streets, flickering lamps, fog rolling in like static. But something was off.

There were footprints in the snow.

They weren’t his.

A message appeared in the corner of the screen:

P2: Took you long enough.

Jay laughed nervously. “Very funny,” he muttered. “New update, huh?”

His controller vibrated—once. Sharp. Intentional.

The footprints moved.

Jay followed them to the town square, where an NPC usually stood frozen beside a fountain. Tonight, the fountain was dry. The NPC was gone.

In their place stood his character.

Same armor. Same weapon. Same name floating above the head.

But the character wasn’t idle.

It was breathing.

P2: You always pick the safe dialogue options,

P2: I wondered what would happen if you didn’t.

The doppelgänger turned and looked directly at the camera.

At Jay.

The game camera snapped out of his control, forcing a close-up of the character’s face. The eyes were wrong—too focused, too aware.

P2: Your turn to watch.

The screen went black.

Jay mashed buttons. Nothing worked. The console light blinked slowly, like a heartbeat.

Then the image returned.

The town was gone.

Jay’s character now stood in a small bedroom—his bedroom. Same desk. Same posters. Same clock on the wall.

The clock read 3:06 a.m.

In the corner of the screen:

SPECTATOR MODE ENABLED

Jay tried to stand.

He couldn’t.

On-screen, Player Two picked up the controller.

The camera turned.

The character smiled.

P2: Don’t worry,

P2: I’ll play better than you did.

The console powered off.

Jay’s TV reflected the dark room—

And behind him,

A controller light turned on.
