The Door Beneath the Waves

Everyone in Coral Bay knew the ocean was dangerous after sunset. That’s why Leo went anyway.

He wasn’t trying to be brave—just curious. Strange lights had been appearing under the water every night, blinking like stars that had fallen into the sea. So Leo grabbed his old flashlight and walked along the shore as the sky turned purple and dark.

That’s when he saw it.

A door.

It stood straight up in the shallow water, made of dark metal and covered in glowing symbols. Waves crashed around it, but the door didn’t move.

Leo hesitated… then pushed it open.

Instead of water, warm air rushed out. He stepped through and found himself inside a vast underwater tunnel—yet he could breathe. The walls shimmered with moving light, and giant sea creatures swam calmly overhead like floating clouds.

A girl about his age appeared, riding a sleek, finned board. “You’re from the surface,” she said. “That means the door chose you.”

She explained that the ocean’s heart—an ancient engine keeping the seas alive—was failing. Surface and sea worlds were beginning to collide.

Together, they raced through glowing corridors, dodged collapsing tunnels, and reached the engine: a spinning sphere of light tangled in dark vines.

Leo remembered his flashlight. He shone it straight into the sphere. The light grew brighter, burning away the vines until the engine roared back to life.

The tunnel shook.

“Time to go!” the girl shouted.

Leo ran through the door just as it slammed shut behind him. The beach was quiet. The ocean calm.

The next morning, the strange lights were gone.

But sometimes, when Leo walks the shore at night, his flashlight flickers—like something beneath the waves is saying thank you.
