Chapter 1: Clashing Ambitions

The glass windows of the 28th floor of a BGC high-rise reflected the morning sun, as employees of TelCom Company, one of the top call centers in Manila, poured into the office with tumblers of coffee and sleepy eyes. The hum of headsets, ringing phones, and chatter filled the air—it was just another day in the Customer Experience Department.

Jessica Santos, 24, walked briskly through the aisle, her blazer perfectly pressed, hair neatly tied in a ponytail. She wasn’t just another call center agent—she was determined, ambitious, and everyone knew she had her eyes set on the newly opened Supervisor position.

The problem?

Bryan Ramirez, 25, the golden boy of the floor. Charming, confident, always quick with his smooth smile and fluent English spiels, he had the same goal—and he knew exactly how to push Jessica’s buttons.

“Late ka na naman,” Bryan teased as Jessica slid into her station, booting up her computer. His voice carried that half-playful, half-condescending tone that always made her blood boil.

Jessica rolled her eyes. “I’m five minutes early. Unlike you, I don’t waste time flirting with the QA staff para lang makakuha ng mataas na score.”

A few desks away, their teammates snickered.

Mara (Jessica’s best friend, supportive but a bit of a gossip) whispered, “Grabe, round 101 na ng Jess vs. Bryan.”

Kyle (the team joker) called out, “Mag-date na lang kayo para matapos na yang rivalry!”

Nina (the quiet but observant one) just shook her head.

Patrick (the team lead for now, watching carefully because he knows only one of them will replace him) sighed.

Rica (ambitious but two-faced, pretending to be friends with both but secretly hoping they destroy each other).

James (the chill dude who avoids drama but always gets dragged in anyway).

The whole floor knew it: Jessica and Bryan were the department’s unofficial competitors. Both were top performers, both had leadership potential—and both were too stubborn to admit that the other might actually be... good.

That morning, Patrick made the announcement: “Alright, team. Management has officially opened the Supervisor Promotion Program. Applications are due this Friday. Only two people will be shortlisted from our account. I think we all know sino ang maglalaban dito...”

Everyone’s eyes immediately darted to Jessica and Bryan.

Jessica straightened her posture, trying to look calm. Bryan smirked, leaning back in his chair with irritating confidence.

And just like that—the office rivalry had officially turned into a battle for their careers.

But what neither of them realized was that in this fight for the same dream, they were about to discover something unexpected—about each other, and about themselves.

Later that afternoon, Jessica was assigned to handle a complicated client escalation. The customer on the other end was furious, demanding to speak only with someone “who actually knows what they’re doing.” Jessica’s fingers hovered over the mute button as she composed herself. Just as she was about to respond, Bryan casually leaned against the divider of her station, sipping his coffee.

“Need help, Santos?” he smirked, voice just loud enough for nearby teammates to hear. “I can jump in if you’re getting rattled.”

Jessica shot him a glare, keeping her headset on. “Thanks, but unlike you, I don’t need backup dancers while I’m on stage.” She unmuted and smoothly apologized to the customer, guiding the call with steady professionalism.

When the issue was finally resolved, Jessica pulled off her headset with a satisfied sigh. But before she could celebrate, Bryan clapped sarcastically. “Wow, applause-worthy. One customer down, a thousand more to go.”

“Better than flirting my way through calls,” Jessica snapped back, standing up. The team’s chatter quieted—everyone sensing another verbal sparring match about to begin. Bryan leaned in just slightly, his grin infuriatingly confident.

“Careful, Santos,” he said in a low tone. “If we’re both fighting for the same spot, you’ll need more than sharp comebacks to win.”

Jessica crossed her arms, refusing to back down. “Don’t worry, Ramirez. I plan on winning the old-fashioned way—by being better than you.”

The shift ended past midnight, and the streets of BGC were still alive with neon lights and late-night workers grabbing food. Jessica wrapped her cardigan tighter as she stepped out of the building, her body heavy with exhaustion but her mind still buzzing from the day’s arguments. She decided to walk to the bus stop near High Street, hoping the cool night air would calm her nerves.

“Of all people,” she muttered under her breath when she spotted Bryan leaning casually against the same bus stop sign, earphones in, tapping his foot to some beat. He noticed her almost instantly, pulling one earbud out with that familiar smirk.

“Wow, Santos,” Bryan said, “I didn’t peg you as the type to take the bus. Akala ko pa-Grab ka lagi.”

Jessica raised an eyebrow. “Not everyone wastes their money showing off, Ramirez. Some of us know the value of saving.”

For a moment, silence hung between them, broken only by the sound of distant traffic. Then, surprisingly, Bryan chuckled—not the mocking laugh she usually got from him, but a softer, more genuine one. “Fair point. Guess I deserved that.”

Jessica blinked, caught off guard. She turned away, pretending to check her phone, but her pulse quickened. For the first time, she wasn’t sure if she was just annoyed at him—or something else entirely.

The next day at TelCom Company, Jessica arrived earlier than usual, determined to avoid another one of Bryan’s smug comments. She settled into her station, reviewing her stats for the week. Everything looked solid—top performance again. She allowed herself a small smile, knowing she was inching closer to that promotion.

But just as she was about to relax, Bryan dropped a folder onto her desk. “You missed a detail on last night’s escalation report,” he said smoothly. “Don’t worry, I already fixed it. Wouldn’t want your record to get a blemish.”

Jessica froze. She hated owing him anything. “You—why would you even bother?” she asked, narrowing her eyes.

Bryan shrugged, his tone annoyingly casual. “Because if I’m going to beat you, Santos, it has to be fair. I don’t win by default. I win because I’m better.” He gave her a grin before walking away, leaving her speechless.

Jessica stared at the corrected report in her hands, her heart thudding faster than she wanted to admit. She told herself it was anger—but deep down, she couldn’t shake the thought that maybe, just maybe, Bryan Ramirez wasn’t the arrogant jerk she had painted him to be.

The weekend had finally arrived, and the Customer Experience Department of TelCom Company was on a mini retreat in Batangas. Jessica sat in the van with Mara and Kyle, the city lights fading behind them as the group headed toward the beach resort. For once, she allowed herself to relax, leaving her spreadsheets and call logs behind.

“Finally,” Mara said, stretching her arms. “No calls, no supervisors breathing down our necks... just sun, sand, and freedom!”

Kyle grinned. “And hopefully no Bryan Ramirez trying to steal all the spotlight.” Jessica smirked, but she couldn’t deny a flutter of nerves at the thought.

The moment they arrived, the group was split into teams for a series of challenges—tug-of-war, relay races, and a scavenger hunt. Predictably, Jessica and Bryan ended up on the same team, much to everyone’s amusement. “Looks like we’re stuck together, Santos,” Bryan said, hands on his hips, eyes scanning the competition. “Try not to slow me down.”

Jessica crossed her arms. “I’ll try, Ramirez, but I’m not responsible for your ego.”

The day was a blur of laughter, sand in unexpected places, and surprisingly competitive teammates. Bryan, as usual, performed flawlessly, but he also threw Jessica encouraging glances whenever she struggled with a task. By the time the scavenger hunt ended, Jessica realized she was laughing more than she had in months—at least partially because of Bryan’s ridiculous attempts to balance teamwork with his signature charm.

During the evening, while everyone gathered for dinner by the beach, Bryan nudged her gently as they passed each other on the way to the buffet. “You know, you’re not as unbearable outside the office,” he said softly, just loud enough for Jessica to hear.

Jessica froze, cheeks flushing, but managed to reply, “Don’t get used to it.”

They shared a brief, charged look before turning away, both pretending the moment hadn’t lingered longer than necessary. Yet Jessica couldn’t shake the feeling that this trip might be changing the rules of their rivalry—slowly, subtly, in ways neither of them wanted to admit.

As the stars twinkled above the Batangas coastline, Jessica caught herself watching Bryan laugh with their teammates, realizing for the first time that maybe the man she hated at work was... not so easy to hate after all.
