Chapter 1

I never thought I see the day I became a dog. Yep. An actual dog. One moment I was taking medicine for my cold and laying down for a nap, and the next I was waking to discover the blanket had somehow gotten huge.

I blinked open my eyes, kicking at the blanket that had suddenly gotten three times larger and was smothering me. Once I got that off, I noticed a furry paw up in the air within my sight.

What? It took me scrambling to my feet and looking down my hands-turned-paws to realize why the blanket was big. Oh no. I jumped down to the floor of my apartment, circling myself to get a good look. Paws. Fur. Tail. Wait, tail? Tail! All of sudden I was wildly chasing said tail. Okay, okay. That's enough. I have to find out what happened. I told myself.

But everything was so distracting. Smells, noises, the now over-sized furniture. It was a lot. "I have to find out what happened," I said aloud. Walking with four legs was odd, but none the less, i trotted around my apartment, searching for anything suspicious.

Then I heard a knock at the door. What? Oops. I thought as I remembered the no dogs policy. I had forgotten it in all the new...dog-ness. I had to hide. Or escape. Uhhh.

More knocking. And a faint, "Miss Sams?" I had just scrambled for cover when the door opened. I looked up to see my neighbor, Veronica Stilton, right before she shrieked.

Why her? Veronica had a fear of dogs from a childhood incident, and was possibly the worst person to discover me in my furry state. I started to back up. "Veronica, it's not what you think it is. I'm not a dog, I'm Katie."

But Veronica was already shaking, eyes wide. She wasn't listening, and probably couldn't understand. And it just kept getting better and better. Veronica's shriek had caused Robert Daley, another resident, to come see what was happening. The moment he saw me, his eyes narrowed, and he quickly left. Muttering something about "policy" and "staff" and "ridiculous."

That's when I decided to make a run for it. I bolted for the door, causing Veronica to scream. I barely squeezed past her before a hand grabbed the scruff of my neck. I yelped, trying to pull away.

"Let me go! I'm not a dog!" I yelled. Somehow that earned me someone tying a rope thing around my neck like a leash. I tried to lunge away, but the dude was good with knots. It didn't budge.

I reared up, trying to jump forward only to have the rope pull painfully against my throat. I stumbled back, looking up to see a young man with brown hair and a calm frown. "Down girl. It's alright," The man murmured, leading me down the steps to the parking lot. "No! I'm not a dog!" I howled. My only reply was a shushing sound.

The man lifted me into the back seat of his car before sliding into the driver's seat. "Easy girl. We're going to go get some help." Realizing I wasn't getting anywhere, I laid down in the seat, listening to the hum of the engine
