Summary

Discover the world of the Irlaki Cats with the bumbling crew of the Daedalus. Although its crew only discover one of many cultures on the New Earth, it is as quirky as any of earth's own. Graham Dennison Arthur begins his trip to the New Earth, wondering how he will control his crew. This is on top of whatever problems the inhabitants of the planet could cause him. These problems appear to be very big when the aliens turn out to be of the Felidae family--the Cat family, and the size of lions or panthers. However, these sophisticated creatures turn out to have their own unique civilization. Although Graham and his dysfunctional crew never get beyond the Irlak Peninsula (largely due to their own ineptitude), they do learn much of what there is to know about these "Children of the Goddess." They are matriarchal, aristocratic, and gain most of their meat by ranching and fishing. They have a larger halluxes than apes and use them to write and pick things up, without having a full opposable thumb. They also use whisker movements to talk, although they can learn to speak through their mouths easily to mimic the crew as they learn English (and of course, their music unfortunately involves singing). The crew hasn't thought very deeply about keeping the Irlaki civilization "pure." These two worlds can't collide without changing both.
