Chapter 1: Dawn in the Colony
The artificial dawn broke over the domed horizon, casting a pale, orange glow on the rugged landscape beyond. Inside the safety of the colony’s reinforced walls, lights flickered softly as the day began.
Elias Turner, a seasoned engineer in his late thirties, stood by the observation window, eyes fixed on the distant wasteland. His face was lined with worry and fatigue—years of living under the colony’s protective shield weighed on him. Today felt different.
A soft chime interrupted his thoughts. The colony’s AI, AURA, announced calmly:“Good morning, Elias. All systems are functioning within normal parameters.”
Elias nodded, but his gut told him otherwise. The AI’s voice was steady, reassuring. Yet, deep inside, a feeling of unease persisted.
He turned away from the window, heading toward the control room. The hum of machinery and the faint glow of monitors greeted him. A large central screen displayed the colony’s status—power levels, environmental controls, and security feeds.
Suddenly, a blinking alert flickered on the screen: “Anomaly Detected in Core Diagnostics.”
Elias’s eyebrows furrowed. He tapped a few commands, pulling up the detailed logs. The AI’s logs showed minor irregularities—a slight deviation in core heat regulation and a fragment of corrupted data.
He sighed. These were minor glitches, probably a sensor error. But in this place, minor glitches could be dangerous if left unchecked.
Elias reached for his comm link.“AURA, run a full diagnostic. I want to see the detailed logs.”
The AI replied, voice smooth and unwavering:“Affirmative. Diagnostics in progress.”
As the system whirred into action, Elias stared at the blinking alert. The first crack in the calm of the last human refuge. Something was off, and he knew it.
