Chapter 1

An Ordinary Tuesday

Tuesday arrived without ceremony.

Morning light filtered through half-drawn curtains, brushing over quiet rooms and unfinished dreams. The city stirred slowly, stretching into the day the way it always did unaware, unconcerned.

By nine, offices were awake.

The building hummed with routine: elevators chimed, keyboards tapped, chairs scraped softly against tiled floors. People greeted each other with tired smiles and practiced politeness.

Near the window sat Dr. Grey, adjusting his watch. He liked arriving early before the noise thickened, before the world asked too many questions. From here, the street below looked peaceful. Cars moved steadily. Pedestrians waited for signals. Life followed rules most people never questioned.

9:18 a.m.

Right on time.

During a brief break, a patient approached him quietly in the hallway, a folder in hand.

“Doctor Grey,” she said, voice soft but warm. “Thank you… really. For everything.”

Dr. Grey smiled faintly, calm as ever. “It’s my job,” he replied, shrugging modestly.

She nodded and walked away, her expression relieved and trusting.

The small interaction left him reflective for a moment. That brief acknowledgment this tiny human gratitude was a comfort he didn’t often admit he needed.

During lunch, the office crowd gathered near the pantry, balancing plates and paper cups. Conversation drifted lazily complaints about work, jokes that had been told too many times, plans for the weekend that might never happen.

“Feels like time’s moving faster lately,” someone said.

“Tell me about it,” another replied.

Dr. Grey smiled faintly, though his thoughts were elsewhere. He always seemed present without fully being there, as if part of him stayed a step behind the moment.

Evening arrived quietly. The office emptied in waves. Outside, the sky softened into muted shades of gold and gray. Streetlights blinked awake one by one.

He chose to walk home.

The streets were familiar shops closing, shutters rolling down with metallic sighs. A vendor packed away unsold goods. Somewhere, music played from an open window, low and comforting.

At a crosswalk, he waited. A woman stood beside him, scrolling through her phone. A man behind them cleared his throat impatiently. When the light turned green, they crossed together, strangers bound briefly by timing.

Home was quiet.

He placed his keys carefully on the table, washed his hands, and stood still for a moment, unsure why his chest felt heavy. The clock ticked steadily, marking seconds without emotion.

Tea steamed gently in his cup. No sugar. Just warmth.

He sat by the window and watched the city settle into night. Lights glimmered in distant apartments. A siren echoed faintly before fading away.

Before bed, his eyes drifted to a framed photograph resting on the shelf. He didn’t touch it. He never did. Something softened in his expression ,quiet, fleeting before he turned away and switched off the light.

Darkness filled the room.

Outside, the city kept breathing, unaware of the lives moving within it.

Tuesday slipped into night like it always did.

Ordinary.Uneventful.

As if nothing had changed.
