Prologue

I don’t know why it happened or what was going through his mind but I know it can’t stay like this forever. We can’t keep acting like nothing happened. We can’t keep continuing to act like what you did was right, that’s now how it works. I was only ten when my dad left us, and seven when everything fell apart.

I was born in Ardrossan, but moved on my seventh birthday after my father got transferred for work. That was three years before he left us; my mum, sister and I. He went to the shops after work one day and never came back. Mum thinks he was having an affair, and God forbid him if he was. Ever since then, it’s just been us. My little sister, Hope, was only two years old when he left, she doesn’t remember him, but I do. I remember everything.

I met Caleb the first week I moved to New York and transferred to a new school. He’s the type of guy that won’t stand by and let you get bullied. I would know firsthand. On my first day of school I got pushed into a squad of lockers and got my books knocked out of my hands. I was scared much worse was going to happen. All I wanted to do was hide myself in a cloak of invisibility, to disappear from the world, but then a strong, firmed “Hey!” came from the side. It was Caleb, standing with his hands in fists playing the tough guy act. I was scared to look up. I didn’t want the bullies to think I was associated with this stranger. Before the situation got violent the bell rang and everyone including the bully ran away, but not without giving me an intimidating look, but Caleb didn’t. He ran up to me, gathered my books, and walked me to my class. Although that was over ten years ago, he still walks me to my first class every morning holding my books. He’s been my best friend ever since.
